My 1st goal today...

Make reports - this is a non-PhD job but has to be done for my sup, I work part time for her in a different role :-(

The One Goal Thread
Avatar for sneaks

I've had a look back at my accountability thread and decided to ditch it. I never held myself or anyone else accountable so it was pretty farcical. I think where I went wrong was that I was setting myself a huge list of things to do each day, which never got done and then felt rubbish for doing it!

So I wanted to start a new version, where I just give myself one goal at a time, that way things might actually get done and I will be in smug-town!

Anyone else is very welcome to join me!

anyone listen to electroclash?

don't worry electroclash came out about 10 years ago, that particular track 8 years ago. I feel dated AND old!

omg no wonder I've heard it before haha! Although I do listen to Heart, so it tends to be about 5 years behind. I think I will stick to singing along to trashy catchy lady gaga songs :$

omg i feel so old. what is electroclash!? last time I listened to music, garage was all the rage!

I've just you-tubed that emerge song. Hmm - I have actually heard it on the radio, although my thoughts are that any 9 year old kid with a casio keyboard could have come up with it and therefore I will not be giving any of my precious stipend to the 'artist' in question to purchase his track.

Conferences
Avatar for sneaks

In my field there are several key conferences which everyone goes to. However, to avoid presenting at them i sign up to loads of obscure conferences, or foreign conferences which are big, but no one will know me. Then it means I can present my work and avoid the huge big scary conferences! My sup hasn't sussed that I do that yet hehe.

STUFF your face with choc and watch some crappy easter telly!

I'm going to try and get out to see clash of the titans at some point, but otherwise catching up with non-PhD work.

Any tips on how you work best?
Avatar for sneaks

I work from home because a) my uni is 3 hours away and b) I work better on my own, it means i can sigh, and make many cups of tea and shout at my screen without people tutting. I also find that when I'm in my uni office I distract everyone in there so much its better for me to work from home.

I use mytomatoes.com and use the 5 min breaks to go on my little trampoline so my blood doesn't stagnate in my body and I get all sleepy. I do listen to music, but I tend to only listen to music with words when I'm doing data entry. The rest of the time I listen to classical music, although not the famous ones e.g. bach etc cos I tend to hum along becayse I've studied music so much, it also means I spend all day wanting to practice my cello, so at the mo I listen to orchestral scores from films.

Congrats jinkim - I usually stay away from these type of threads cos they make me feel like crap! But very pleased for you, all the best for the viva!

Wanted: Computer Whiz

ok this hasn't gone well. i tried the fix and then got overwhelmed by computer jargon so I thought, 'I'll just uninstall the whole SQL server thingy and then reinstall'. now I can't find the sql server to download - I don't even know what it is and if I even need it. Got a feeling I did something very bad!

DEBATE!

its a game called 'god of war', I think its about a sparton who runs about killing greek gods and titans. hence the minataur and the cyclopse. He is actually doing a PhD, so not all that thick, but his duties as said greek god in this apparently wonderful game are taking precendence (as well as his full time job).

My field is 99.9% women, so relationships won't really happen, although we do have a select few who I've heard have been called the 'psych dykes' - not very PC! However, the top level people in my field are all men - at this point, if we had better smilie facilities I would do a roll of the eyes. There was an incident at a conference last year involving lap dancing and one of these top level men. The lap dancer was a student - very cringe worthy

@ephiny - my hubby does enjoy a nice little 9-5 job (well 8-4) where he leaves the office at 4:10 everyday and leaves all his work problems back in the office, and because of flexi, if he does work until later, he gets to add it all up and put it towards a nice few days off per month. Ah the civil service -I think that is where i will be looking if the academic route fails me.

If the majority of goals in a football match get scored in the first and last few minutes of each half, then why don't they just have 10 minute games? and then I could watch something decent!

Would just like to point out that the only job that has come up in my area (that I would be qualified and experienced enough for) in the last 3 months offers the salary of £21k - its based in London. £21k! After tax, NI, student loan repayments and living/commuting to london I would be worse off than being on my stipend. I would also be worse off than doing a minimum wage shop job. :-s
