Distance to London would definitely be a factor on house prices, so you may want to control for that.
I wouldn't say it was population per se that affected house prices - a house in a village with 100 houses in can be really expensive! So you may want to control for something like average wage in that city or something - so measuring the affluence of the area.
Would you also need to control for types of houses e.g. one city might have lots of 5 bedroom huge family homes and the other might have a lot of little 2 up 2 downs, which would affect the average houseprice.

Do you have pets? How do they react to your writing-up?

I was thinking lemurs. I hope its lemurs but not sure if they are rodents or what? I guess they are marsupials or something?

PhD Finances

I'm always in my interest free overdraft - it might as well be my general account. I do bits of teaching and consultancy, but always under £5k for the year so it stays untaxed. I have hubby's money which is good because he pays for the mortgage and bills and then I pay for food, travel, petrol etc. but it all seems to go! Luckily I am sponosred by a company and their money (around £2k) is supposed to go into my monthly stipend pay BUT for some reason it never does, so I get paid it across 4 months all in one go (these next four months - yay!) so I have an extra £500 each month until july. Although this year I'm putting it towards a 'funding finished, can't get a job, can't afford to eat' fund for october :-(

Ooh yes, we did flowers ourselves too and saved tons of cash being 'minimalist' - we had 3 red gerberas in a vase in the middle of the table - which looked really good. The vases were 25p each - we found them in tesco! and we just had to order about 60 gerberas so we could pick them up from the florist in the morning and get my auntie to cut them down to three different sizes. They looked really good and when we had everything on the table we were glad we hadn't gone for anything too big.

I also got my dad to do the invitations - although he is an art school graduate so they looked fab!

Cake - we got from M&S, it was lovely and also cheap and we put it on a cake stand from ebay and then put red ribbon and gerberas on it - it looked really sophisomocated!

I would say that ebay will be your friend!

My computer keeps on wanting to download Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892)

But it keeps failing and gives error code 737D

Does anyone know how I can stop this happening, otherwise my pc is continually trying to update which is very annoying!

If it a pre-wedding party you want to make sure you don't out-do the bride. I think lips or eyes depends on you. I have extremely long eyelashes so tend to go with the eyes, but i guess angelina jolie would go for lips. And I would go for things that match your skin tone. I know for me pinks would be odd because I am very pale, so i look like some kind of albino mouse. I know if you have blue eyes you're not supposed to use blue eyeshadow etc because you are supposed to bring out your eye colour so go for something that contrasts (I always go for brown to contrast against blue).

it sounds to me that you love your PhD, and you love your bf. I think you need to step back slightly, both can work if you want them to. This may mean giving up your weekends to spend with your other half, not the PhD. It may even mean submitting 6 months later than you wanted to, but if he is very important to you, what is 6 months in the scale of things? I'm sure he would understand if you asked him back - e.g. your under a lot of pressure and stressed, but you want to work it out so you can be with him. Don't sacrifice your life for your PhD because 2 years into it it might be your biggest regret, you will also suffer from major burnout with your current schedule which may mean a whole year out to recover anyway and your health (mental and physical) will deeply suffer.

I'm sure your supervisor will get over your concerns. In the mean time you could ask to go on training perhaps, or ask to be paired with a sort of technical mentor - someone in your department, or even at another uni perhaps that can help to guide you on the practical elements of your research.

in the mean time - try some chocolate for a short term pick me up (gift) (gift)

fetichism or fetishism?
Avatar for sneaks

I have a range of different terms in the literature, for the same construct - and this happens for several other constructs too. I've decided to have a brief 'terminology' page, which just goes through the slight differences in what they all mean and the reason and definition of the term I've decided to use. Then I have been consistent all the way through the thesis (e.g. called it abc), even if researchers have reported it using a different term e.g. xyz I have still said "researcher P thought abc....."

:( I just want to cry/have a rant

I think there are always things you will want to add. I know several people who have held onto their theses for YEARS, never actually submitting, but keeping changing, adapting, adding, removing and at some point you just have to draw the line and go for it. I'm sure it will be fine!

conferences that publish your work
Avatar for sneaks

That's what I'm thinking, BUT its the only conference to be held in my area i.e. my area of psychology on my specific subject, like EVER and it won't be repeated. I think I should be presenting because I want to be seen as one of the lead researchers in this area. But as I say, not having results is an issue. Plus, to get results i need to do about 100 hours of qualitative analysis which is not doable by wednesday.

I have written abstracts similar to this i.e. lots of intro, method, results pending and implications of potential results to the wider field.

I guess I've decided I would like to submit something.....maybe another study which I have stats for?

congrats Wal - although you seem to be on a constant war with the amount of pizza topping provided.

I have saved no money this week -although it is the first week where i actually cooked everything I bought at the beginning of the week, rather than not wanting it and then throwing it out when the use by date had passed - so that has saved me money.

I have also saved money by pretending that I'm at other meetings next week, so won't be able to go to one that someone tried to make me go to and therefore saves £ in travel.
