ah, if he has no desire then it may be better for him to quit now. My husband does really want to get it done - its just a slight laziness and time issue, and lack of guidance. Maybe just focus on the positives - he's been paid to be a researcher for a few years and got great experience in stuff like presentations etc. Maybe start him thinking about careers he actually wants and would enjoy?

I don't know how I would handle the titles - I would want to show it off but I know it would be hard for my other half for me to do that, and I can see that's how you are too. Mabe only use it at work? and not on bank statements etc? - although that seems so unfair!

This is a tricky one! my hubby has yet to finish his phd - after going to a full time job, he just hasn't had the time. I worry that it will never get done. I also worry that if I become a Dr before him, or maybe even if he doesn't at all he will be left feeling emasculated, especially as he started a year before me. My approach has been going through it with him on weekends, proofreading sections so hopefully he will get it done soon.

i don't really know what to say, is there any way you could try and help him out i.e. sit down and see how much he does actually have to do and maybe arrange a plan for him to do it?

Well there's nothing like an email from your sup saying "can you send me all the work you've been doing cos I'm at uni with the printer" to make you quake in your boots!

I can't use any online storage stuff because my data is so sensitive :-( rubbish, because I work from about 5 computers - although one is SO secure you can't even open hotmail on it and you can't download ANY attachments without them going via an encryption/security team :-( hence why I work from home haha!

In my field its a bit more common to go into a part time lectureship (get your foot in the door) and then onto a lectureship. I don't know anyone who has done an RA position in between, it seems you are either going to go down the research route OR the lecturing (with researchon the side). I would rather do the latter, because it offers you more security and longer tenure, BUT there is nothing for me!

I don't know when to start applying, my funding finishes in oct and I'm assuming I should leave it until later to start applying, otherwise they will want me to start too early.

My bro announced he was visiting for the weekend, so I've spent all morning cleaning, washing bed linen and going food shopping, because all our meals are for two, not three! have walked the dog. Now I'm going to have a quick cup of coffee and get on with some quote finding before hubby gets home.

I got married in my 2nd year after we had been together for 7 years. I think it really depends on what kind of girl/woman you are and what kind of wedding you want. If you have dreamt about it since a child, then I would wait - you will become wrapped up in colour schemes, favours and choices of vase, napkin, table runners, chair covers etc. I've seen people doing PhDs who get like this and they literally spend all day everyday on the internet researching different things for the wedding, it becomes obsessive.

If you just want to get married and have a small celebration of the fact then go ahead!

ah, Latex - (not the S&M kind), I had a look and was very impressed with the finished product, but like you Teek, didn't fancy learning it. Plus my supervisor would hate it and want me to copy it all into word anyway so she could crash about my text like a giant with a tippex pen. I don't think journals in my field would take the format either (although I assume they change it into this anyway)

Well then I would email the man/woman with a very short email just to enquire. I wouldn't say "if you don't get back to me tomorrow I will email again on monday" - it comes across a bit aggressive :-s

just say something like "dear xxx, I was delighted to meet you on xxx and I really enjoyed discussing my ideas for project Y. I was wondering if a decision has been made regarding the PhD as I am extremely keen to get started if successful"

Or something similar - keep it short, they're busy people!

Well I'm going to spend all tonight (in front of tv) pulling out a list of potential quotes for each point, then I can choose ones that are less 'provocative'. Although she wants me to change it so I'm saying "this could happen anywhere, in any company" when the literature has criticised studies for not looking at specific contexts. - oh well!

I'm going to have a go at pulling it all together. I read through a chapter of a friend recently and she has offered to do the same, and I know I can trust her not to want her name as an author on it if she does so - others in my dept aren't so forgiving!

I'd send a short email, preferrably to an admin member, rather than the supervisor themselves, just asking if there was any news concerning the decision because you are really keen etc etc. If you can get it to admin it won't look like you are pestering the supervisor and the admin people will then bug the sup about it for you. I would imagine that they would try and tell whoever before easter.
