i don't play the guitar, but I do play another stringed instrument (trying to keep a veil of anonymity here) and don't they have harmonics? so if you get one string tuned, the rest can follow through matching the harmonic with the pure string?

I went to a local comp - about 1500 students. Its in the country and is in a garrison town, so 90% of the students left every 2 years to go off to germany or cyprus with their army parents. I don't think it has every affected my life, I came out of my school with the best grades and beat all my boarding and public school friends who went to the same orchestra as me. But recently I've had a lot of people saying to me that they wouldn't step foot in a state school. Whereas I would argue that an A from a state school is better than an A at public school becuase you have had larger class sizes, worse resources etc.

What kind of school did you all go to? public/private/state? same sex? boarding?

And has it affected your chances in life?

Well I bought it, but not watched it yet. I need to get these revisions done today - well the revisions of what I did yesterday :-s

Waiting for plumber to arrive to check boiler, and then will get on with the results section - this is my nightmare at the mo so if I can just get it done so sup agrees its fine, then I can finally leave it alone and go on to looking at the intro and discussion revisions tomorrow.

oh no! When I said "change all the quotes" I meant subsitute them with (her words) "less provocative" ones. Problem is the quotes I have chosen perfectly support my points, so it basically means deleting the quotes completely because I don't have any others that make the point so concisely i.e. people ramble on about the same thing for 2 pages, whereas the people I have taken quotes from sum it up in 3 lines.

I've done a bit at the beginning about how great the company is - and the company is anonymous the whole way through, being referred to as Company X (or similar :-) )

I just feel that its gone from having some real eye catching findings, to being dumbed down to the point where (I compare 2 groups, one comes out worse) both groups seem the same.

I'm trying to write a paper at the moment, for publication. My PhD is sponsered by a company and I therefore do my research in that company. Problem is the research is quite 'revealing' and potentially could show them in a bad light. I've had my academic supervisor now change all the wording, all the quotes from interviews etc. because they are worried that the company supervisor will get in a mood about it (even though the company is never named throughout the whole thing).

I feel like I am actually having to change the findings I report, just to suit them. I know its part of the research game, but changing it this much just seems a little wrong. :-(

urgh I could cry, after re-working my paper for the 111111th time I've just got an email saying to re-work it back again. I'm getting seriously tired with this!

I'm amazed that you were able to put an ESRC bid together yourself! My sup did all that for me - I wouldn't have a clue, so well done! My sup applies for about 20 grants a year from the ESRC and has only had about 4 actually come off over about 8 years, so don't worry. I'm sure there will be loads of opportunities out there. Keep an eye on other unis as well in that area.

hmm because of my aversion to cold food I opted for scrambled egg on toast - toast which was made by me at home (well breadmaker bread). So not exactly healthy but probably a smaller meal or less sugar loaded than I usually have. I was also conscious that if I didn't have something substantial I would end up binging again in the late afternoon.

Plan is to have a snack - maybe an apple? at about 4-5pm and then soup for dinner, which is butternut squash, veg stock and onion, so 0 calories (don't burst my bubble!)

I've done 6 tomatoes today, and counting which is an all time record (I know its pathetic but good for me!)

I like to have slides where each bullet point is no more than 3 words - preferably one or two words because it makes me seem super knowledgeable and stops people reading ahead to think of nasty questions.

Haven't posted on this thread for aages. Still not really feeling too good, but the meeting was re-arranged for friday, so I have to re-write the paper for then. Having spent all day yesterday staring atthe computer screen I need to get work done today. I also have an analysis session booked in with someone on tuesday, so need to get a load of analysis done for then so they can reliability code it for me. so today...

ok, so it didn't go too well, I ended up binging on sugar and then had a massive headache, which was kinda predictable. I think I tried to be too good i.e. giving up caffeine and sugar on the same day just wasn't going to happen. So today I am cutting down in sugar and cutting out the coffee, but going to allow normal tea. So far I've...

- 1 innocent smoothie (2 of 5 a day)
- 1 vitamin tablet
- had frosted wheats mmmm sugar
- taken dog out for 25 mins

I'm a bit stuck for what to eat for lunch. I'm having butternut squash soup, with no bread for dinner, so I was going to have a larger lunch, but have no idea what to buy.
