SPSS- any ideas?

i never mess around with ordinal/nominal. I just chuck everything in as scale data! there is page in andy field somewhere that says there are arguments for using likert type data e.g. strongly agree - strongly disagree as scale data.

I would leave it as scale data but make sure you interpret it correctly e.g. moving from 6 to 5 means moving from poor to working class.

Or maybe you need to dummy code it?

ok so by weekend is officially out the window. I have to re-write the method and results and then write the discussion from scratch. I also have to TRY and do this so we can visit my mother in law tomorrow, which means that I have to hae most of this done by 10am tomorrow. I can see this not happenning but will try my best.
So in the next hour.

- re-write method
- start re-write on results.

Seriously mods - the videos of Foxy the Gerbil clearly demonstrate that you procrastinate far more than any of us!

hmm I love radio 4 because it was constantly on as I grew up, so its kind of like having surrogate parents talking through the day in the background.

Wal - was it you who got hooked on nicorette gum? and if so have you managed to kick the habit?

I've remember you Danb - although I was probably more of a Lurker when you were posting more often. I do seem to remember that there is a facebook group somewhere for PGF memebrs. and I do think there have been a few PGF meets - but I've always been a bit concerned about anonymity, especially joining the facebook group because everyone at my uni would see that i have done that and maybe make the link.

Maybe when we have all finished we can all meet up. I'm very tempted to thank everyone from the forum in my acknowledgement page so eventually you will see it on ethos (its bad when you spend more time thinking about acknowledgments than actually writing the thesis)

Anyone else feel the PhD has enhanced or created random addictions?

Apart from the obvious e.g. coffee, chocolate etc. I have become addicted to 'Lion Man' on sky 1, because I like watching baby tigers and lions, but mostly because by constantly annoying them (I'm watching him now riding a male lion like a horse) sooner or later he (the lion man) will be eaten by one of them which will be great tv.

I always imagined Wal to look like the boy from roseanne - I think its because of the haircut thread where he said his hair goes curley if it grows

But after the gary barlow and 'reddy-brown hair' - translation = ginger. maybe its damien lewis

Or maybe hugh fernley wittingstall.

Well I'm wearing george **sneaks hides in shame**

I think i deserve an oscar for the most useless accountability thread - i.e. it doesn't actually hold me or anyone else accountable for anything!

I think bilbobaggins deserves one for being the most inspirational poster - who makes me feel like a complete nob for moaning about trivial matters such as loopy supervisors!

Wal - oscar for most useful pirate software distributor
Eska - for most inappapropriate crushes i.e. wierd hippy men in 2nd hand shops

Quote From eska:

I think sneaks is quite short with shoulder length dark hair, and immaculate make up, and that she sleeps in a dog basket, but manages to wake up pristine.

Shockingly accurate! well apart from the waking up pristine thing!

I imagine jinkim to be on a constant treadmill, jogging away while recording her comments and thoughts about her thesis on a dictaphone. I think she may be one of those annoying people who can 'do it all' and not just say "i can't be arsed" :p

Hmm, sneaks does in fact sit at her desk in a top hat? Ok maybe not, but it was a nice image!

Why yes, I do! and usually a hoody and joggers with my chavtastic sense of style.

mother's day

just a card for me - although I don't think my mum really likes it. We never did it before I went away to uni, so it now feels like a 'guilt card' i.e. sorry I never see you card, rather than celebrating her. I think she would much rather that I popped down for the weekend or something. I also have to consider that my bro will never remember and don't want him to look like an idiot when nothing turns up from him.

I can't be bothered to do my PhD.........

a good way to stop office mates chatting is to wear earphones - don't actually play anything through them, but make a bit fuss of firstly ignoring them when they talk and then going WHAT?? SORRY?? and then dramatically take out the earphones.

lights on, lights off?
Avatar for sneaks

There are quite a lot of people in my department who work in the dark - sounds strange, but they turn off all the lights apart from their desk one. I remember doing this in my undergrad and it made me feel more focused on the work. But I also remember my dad saying its really bad for your eyes!

I just wondered what everyone else does
