I tried to go jogging yesterday, but found out I can't. Not because my back surgeon told me not to (I love to ignore authority figures) but because I have found that I can only walk OR sprint and am physically incapable of doing anything in between. I didn't realise this - I thought I was jogging but my other half pointed out that I was going way too fast! So maybe I should just stick to doing a really short sprint in the morning??

Funding advice

I would imagine part time working to self-fund would be difficult unless you have some savings. Tuition fees cost a few £k per year and then you have to think about living costs.

the best thing to do is approach a potential supervisor. Then there are several options. a) the sup might have enough budget to fund you b) the university might offer studentships - although this is usually through a competition c) get research council funding - this requires putting in a grant application to research councils such as ESRC or EPSRC.

You can also try charities, there are some who offer grants to women graduates for example.

hmm I can't do swimming as I have long hair and just cannot face it getting ravaged by chlorine. I walk the dog everyday up and down a big hill. My aim for this week is to get the Wii fit out for the first time in a few months, do a dreaded weigh in and then start using it again, and doing my home exercise bike. i want to buy a home cross trainer as well as when I worked out gym membership, parking, petrol and the fact I am only allowed to use cross trainer and exercise bike (because of stupid spinal problems) it worked out cheaper just to buy them - and posh versions like you get at the gym anyway + I can watch my own DVDs (mainly adam sandler films :$ )

bio oil is a bit greasy, bit like baby oil - best to put it on in the evening and then wash it off in the morning. I haven't ordered my bobbi brown stuff yet so using mabelline dream mousse or something like that for foundation, its really good and I went out and bought a mascara today as I seem to go through them once a month! my lashes must be twice the length of most peoples so I reckon I go through mascar at twice the speed. get a heated eyelash curler!

I thoroughly recommend the palmers coco butter body butter stuff mmmmmmm it smells sooo good. I wish I could have it on toast! (altho would probably taste disgusting).

Ooh yes bio oil is great. I bought it when I had surgery to reduce the scar afterwards. I have no idea if it worked because the scar is one that goes all the way up my spine like a zip - I like to think its where they put my stuffing in. So not sure if it worked because I can't see it, but it smelt really nice. I also like Palmers coco butter in the tub mmm - smelling that actually cures chocolate cravings, although try not to eat it!

I would say after years of buying stuff like rimmel etc its worth it to buy less stuff i.e. not 40 shades of eye shadow you will never wear, and just buy better brands. I like BB cos they do foundation pale enough for me which mac etc don't do - those ones turn me orange!

I'm converted to Bobby Brown I think - just about to stock up! I sometimes apply concealer under my eyes if I look nackered ha ha, I used to more than I do now.

I use body lotion everywhere but to avoid sticky bra, just rub it in loads and then let it dry (I usually brush my teeth while waiting) and then put bra and clothes on.

Eye shadow must come first. If you want your mascara not to smudge - and I know the tricks because my eyelashes are about 2 meters long - you must use waterproof mascara AND check what kind of foundation/conceler you are using. I have one concealer that seems to melt the mascara so it ends up all over my face about 10 mins after applying and then I look like an idiot all day.

For flaky lips get Body SHop Vitamin E lip balm - its amazing, its the only thing I ever wear on my lips, mainly because they say its 'lips or eyes' and my eyelashes mean the latter get all the attention.

no PhD work done today. I have just done all the non-PhD stuff. But I think I might buy hubby the game he wants on PS3 so I can get some work done this weekend - its a bit like a baby's dummy - keeps him quiet and occupied haha.

a really convoluted way around it might be to do section breaks. I hate word sometimes - but not enough to go over to a Mac

Gameshows!

ooh yes blockbusters! I agree with university challenge. I usually get about 5 questions per show, depending on the rounds. Anything related to music or art I usually get, although I do psychology for my PhD. I am completely lost on the chemical reactions etc. The contestants seem to be post docs with 800 degrees, and they have made them do another undergrad so they qualify for the programme!

What about wipeout, Wogan's perfect recall or the ones I was never allowed to watch as a child e.g. price is right, play your cards right, generation game, wheel of fortune, even blind date (is that a game show?) - My parents deemed them too trashy for my precious eyes

after being involved in a heated debate about hanging 10 year old boys and Jon Venables I had an awful night of vivid nightmares about finding out I work with one of the boys and it being really scary once they found out I knew. Its annoying because the fact that they were really scary in my nightmare goes against what I have been arguing with people i.e. they were kids, who didn't really know what they were doing.

Anyway, I think I will do my report before lunch and then settle in to restructuring the writing I did last week.

Bonferroni correction is a technique to avoid type 1 error. YOu basically either divide the value you are using to denote significance (usually .05) by the number of tests you conduct (e.g. .05/5 because you are conducting 5 tests) OR you can just say you will use .01 or .001 rather than .05 so you won't accidently think something is significant when it shouldn't be.

Sounds like you would be better off doing an ANOVA with post hocs. ANOVA will show you there is a difference between groups. But it won't show you where those differences actually are - this is what post docs can do after you have run the initial ANOVA.

Not sure my brain will compute what your data is but you may need a MANOVA - if you have more than 1 Dependent variable

I agree with the ANOVA suggestion. If you do persist in using multiple T-Tests make sure to use the boneferroni correction.
