Citing secondary sources in conference abstract

Sorry, I couldnt get them - maybe try Walminski?

If its an obscure thing, then I wouldn't bother resubmitting - will anyone really notice? I think you can get away with it, because browne talks about it, then cites black and white, so technically he did say it!

Getting a job post-PhD
Avatar for sneaks

I'm in the same boat - although there are NO postdocs to apply for. Some people have said to apply for ESRC funding, but most of the grants seem to need someone who is a Dr already, and connected to an institution. Come October, I will be a 'floating' unemployed academic trying to get their thesis done, so don't think the ESRC will even entertain an application from me and my sup doesn't see the urgency - all her other supervisees seem to have rich partners who can fund them through writing up. Mine's lovely, but pretty poor!

SEM for Dummies?

Anyone know any VERY easy to read guides/texts to structural equational modelling?? I'm thinking Andy Field type guide.

complaints against staff

I would make sure all the email communication is kept. I find that emails with 'stroppy' students can get quickly heated. Its much better to get them to come along to your office - make sure there is another colleague in the room, and give them 'appropriate feedback' about their behaviour and their work. This has worked wonders for several demanding students I've had. They appreciate it because they are essentially attention seekers and if they don't get their own way they kick up a fuss.

Hi all!

MK - I think I do prefer doing 1 page and agonising about it, which is why I'm a bit unhappy about what I sent in, but my sup wanted it all so.... Although I sent it and she emailed straight back with "do you mind if I use track changes" - hmph! although actually wouldn't mind if she changed it all, then I can put the better version in my thesis!

Wal - well done on the questionnaire, keep going, I'm not envying you all those cognitive interviews.

I spent yesterday trying to shift the migraine I've had since wednesday, but it won't go. I have decided that it will probably go when I have done the discussion, so today's things to do...

- write report for organsiation who let me use participants
- try and write discussion

I haven't written a discussion since my masters, and that one was pretty poor. I have no idea what to put in it apart from 'limitations' of which I can think of many, but no implications etc.

SSPS-maths skills
Avatar for sneaks

At my uni, we have to learn all the 'real maths' at undergrad - then that is essentially forgotten about and you use SPSS instead at postgrad level. SPSS is like excel and it does it all for you - it takes a bit of learning but its quite intuitive.

You may have 1 or 2 exam questions on the theory behind the statistics you use, but it depends on the university.

i got all 5 done, although probably quite badly. I've just pressed the dreaded 'send' button on my email to sup. Hoping the fact that the intro, method and results come to a stupidly long 11,000 (for a publication!?) and that will trick her into forgetting I haven't done the discussion - maybe :$

I'm off to get my house sorted this morning - there is rubbish everywhere and it needs sorting!

Will be back at my desk pm for a report I have to write for people who participated in my work, and then some consultancy work. THEN I will think about the discussion. :-(

Hope all is going well MK - what is 'family time'? - with kids? I'm pleased I only have to walk the dog at some point, althogh having a kid around to make the tea would be VERY useful :p

had a very fitfull sleep last night - dreaming about how my life fitted into the themes i have to write up today - they did't (not surprising as I am not at all like the participant group) and I was super stressing trying to change things so my life fitted the themes - urgh!

So I have 5 themes to write up today, I think the best strategy is to do 1 or 2 really well, and then try and get onto the rest SO if I don't get them finished, it will look better, because they will be of good quality, rather than sending it all done, but looking awful.

So....onwards, will call down for tea to be brought up to me (this may take some time).

end note madness
Avatar for sneaks

I'm in psychology and I have been told that endnote/footnotes look sloppy in our discipline - like you couldn't be bothered to work out how to put it in the text. I don't think I will have any in my thesis hopefully. I also submitted a paper to a journal recently who asked that the footnotes were removed and put back in the text - they were right it looked much better!

If you don't want to add them then don't, although I would follow the style of your field.

What motivation?
Avatar for sneaks

Same as below! I can't wait to get a 9-5 job where I can go home and not think about work - it would be heaven. I just stress and stress about my PhD so I think about it 24/7, yet I'm lazy at the same time - not sure how that works!

Am I going to fail? How to get out of a rut - help needed!
Avatar for sneaks

31,000 words in 7 months is very doable. you need a plan of what you want to write. Once you have that, you can break it down to manageable portions. You can then focus on getting the portions ticked off the list.

I'm not too up on mres things, but that's where I'd start!

ok, I'm off for the night. I didn't get on ot doing the results, but have finished what I am going to do for the intro. I don't think I have enough critical stuff in it, but I'm going to give it to sup first as she will probably cut half of it anyway.

Going to have to get up super early, I have 1 day to write up ALL the results and its a qualitative study AAARGH so going to be digging about for quotes. AND sup wants me to link it to literature in the results, not the discussion, so is going to be a very stressful day!

Might map out the plan of what I want to say while watching a bit of telly!

its the results section of a paper. I think its going to be super- daunting though. Done two paragraphs one an area where i have literally had to scrape together references for, so quite pleased, and reckon I can get another paragraph out in the next hour. I then have to critique it all though, so reckon it might take longer than doing it before lunch. The critique bit is the bit my sup will be wanting to see!

I can hear thumb twiddling too, but on the PS3 controller - and lots of shooting etc. I think he's playing bioshock 2 :-(
