one thing I have done is send colleagues chapters - i.e. people who are 1-2 years out of their PhD. At least its something! Actually a forum member who has 'phinnished' (won't name so they won't be stampeded with reading requests) has given me some excellent feedback on my methods chapter which is far more in depth than I'd ever have from my sup!

Maybe there should be a 'I'll read yours if you'll read mine' reading exchange on here.

Unfortunately its probably a bit late for me as I need to submit in the next 2 weeks!

haha I ask my sup about specific sections e.g. "I really need some guidance in section X, what do you think of it, and do I need any changes" - response comes within 5 secs (i.e. not read section X" = "do whatever reads best"...great. :-s

I have similar worries. The beginnings of each of my chapters has been extensively scribbed on by sup, but flick through a few pages and they are all blank. She basically reads the first few pages, gets an idea in her head how it should be structured, asks me to re-structure and NEVER reads the full chapter. This means that ALL my dsicussion sections have never been read - this is concerning to me.

All I can hope is that they will be good enough to scrape through without too many amendments and trust my own judgement.

Goal 1 done, Goal 2 = sort out some analyses

I dunno Skig, I have this last chapter, that is quite a lot of analyses. SUp asked me to change it into Study 3a and 3b, rather than one big study. But I personally think this has overcomplicated it all. But I haven't really read through it. I'm also worried that the discssion of that chapter is supposed to lead on quite well into the discussion for the whole thesis. But I think I've made it far too specific (e.g. about single measures I used, rather than the bigger picture). I think my aim this week will be to read the whole thesis, whilst jotting notes down for the discussion chapter and working out if it is any good.

Meanwhile my sup should read it and get back to me. TBH I'm just praying she doesn't want another round of major changes, or I may kill myself, or move to Italy, one of the two!

Hi All,

I sent my 2nd draft (Hopefully reasonably final draft) of chapters 1-6 to sup yesterday. Its pretty awful though and I think its all a bit rubbish. But my main aim today is to get a load of other work done.

- Goal 1 read through lecture notes so am prepared for weds (am going to do this 3 times today)

phd lengths?

I think it varies, my hubby's one was about 32,000, but it was maths based. People in my small work group have submitted anything from 40,000 to 100,000 (social sciences). It also depends on what kind of methods you're using as the qualitative section of my thesis has dragged out the word count a little too much.

right, I've nearly done my lecture prep, I'm about to go to the lecture (run my someone else this week) to see what the group is like and if I can make my lecture for next week more interactive before putting it up online.

I need to work out a bit of admin and get changed from joggers into smart clothes I can be seen in!

stayed up til 1am last night doing teacher prep. I still have more to do, but need to leave for uni at 11.30 for a different thing, so have until then to finish off lecture slides and plan seminars.

I'm still here. I've finished the move of the discussion. Hmm I said 6 but its now 8.30 :$

Am going to swig a mug of coffee and then get on with the teaching prep I have to do

I've just found that my sup wants me to move a section from one chapter into the one I thought I'd finished yesterday :-s I'm going to try and get this done before 6

Dummy coding question
Avatar for sneaks

I've dummy coded a variable in my research. In my 'measures' section I say

"type of chocolate was measured using 4 categories, which for the purposes of analysis were dummy coded, using 'galaxy' as a reference category".

My supervisor has written "need to explain what this means" next to this sentence.

Now I think that my examiners either should know what this means, or should go and read a book to find out!

Am I being unreasonable, or should I try and explain what this means (My sup is rubbish at stats, so not sure on this one!)

I've been procrastinating :$ by reading through articles on the Meredith Kercher case. I've decided (with my extensive knowledge of the case :p ) that Amanda Knox definitely was there and probably killed her, in any case, she's definitely a sociopath.

Argh I wish I'd done forensic psychology.

I've also spent an hour trying to work out why my sup circled 2 sentences - no notes against them, just circled :-s

How to stop word going crazy
Avatar for sneaks

well I had a google and it seems what slows it down is sometimes 'repagination' that goes on in the background. You can take this option off, to speed it up, but you can only do that in draft view (by going to options > advanced> general and unticking the repagination option). I think I'll use this if it gets awful, but I prefer working on print view.

lecture tips
Avatar for sneaks

I've got to lecture a group of 250 students. I *want* to make it more than a 'presentation', but stuck on how. I'm worried that any group task or discussion may descend into an uncontrollable racket of conversation and me being unable to get them back to concentrating or even to shut up so I can carry on with the lecture afterwards.

Any ideas?
