hmm a 9 from me - I've never eaten vegetables before so it was a new experience. I swear one of the cats told me "*&%$ off" at the end of the night, but it could have been a drunken Wal under the table!?

Eska - that wasn't a cleaner, I moved out of that house at xmas, was it the crazy lady from next door??

Swine Flu - What do you think?
Avatar for sneaks

hmm, not had it yet (turkey). Think part of the problem is rolling news. I don't think the snow was half the issue they made it out to be and where it was bad people do cope. I think because they need news to fill the 24 nature of it, then they push stories so they reach mass hysteria. Lets face it nothing exciting ever happens in the UK, its not like we are constantly under threat like the blitz or something, so people need to make their life feel more important by getting all stressed out about a flu strain/snow/stock exchange collapse etc etc.

Do other PhD students find it difficult to meet a partner?

I'm married to another PhD student, which sounds dandy, but he doesn't really do any work, so he doesn't understand why I TRY and do work everyday, which can be problematic. Maybe I can start a Postgradforum matchmaking thread. :-x :-x

can you cut up all the veg (especially the leeks) really small please i.e. grate it into the food, so I can't feel the texture! I might like it then. I tried haloumi for the first time last week - not too keen on 'city slickers' pub food (houmous, pitta, roasted red peppers, haloumi) but as haloumi is cheese I will give it a go. Might have to lose a point on the puff pastry, although you admitted it, so whose to tell.

Thanks algequeen! I'm familiar with PCA - I only have 20 participants, I think PCA needs 100 per 10 questions for questionnaire analysis. These are qualitative interviews, so am counting codes, under predefined categories. I'm going to have a look at cross-tabs chi square tonight and see if it answers any questions!

undergrads seem like children to me! I'm only 25, but they all look about 12 - so fresh faced! I could't imagine dating one (even if I wasn't married)

hmm, was doing well until I had a big lunch and a dog walk and then felt really sleepy. Just started to do a lot more work and then stupid save the children man came begging, so I had to tell him I prefer my dog and don't really like children :$

He looked a bit confused, but then tried to convince me to put my hard earned stipend towards the charity - erm no, maybe when I am earning more than I need to survive!

I went on a networking course :$ and they said a follow up email is vital. Their other tip was never give anyone a business card without writing something on it e.g. 'we talked about my PhD' - so at the end of the event they remember who it was. my uni won't stretch to business cards for PhDs though so I will have to wait to put that into practice!

ok I have 2 groups with 20 people in them each.

I want to compare how many times they have mentioned topics x, y, z in a positive or negative way in interviews (X- X+ Y- Y+ etc)

So I wanted to do 6 t-tests (x, Y, Z) but now doing Mann Whitney cos of small sample.

However, group 1 generally mentions X, Y Z A LOT MORE both positively and negatively. So I want to do proportions rather than raw stats.

So participant 1 mentions X 20 times, of those mentions 5 were positive and 15 were negative so their score

X- = 25%
X+ = 75%

Then I want to use the mann whitney on the proportion data

IS THIS OK?? - need stats guru please :p
