hmm, try porridge for breakfast - keeps you full. I always have trouble with lunch, usually don't have anything in so end up eating lots of snacks like crisps/choc so make sure you plan ahead about what you want to eat for lunch and make dinners earlier e.g. 6pm. Generally slightly smaller portions of the same thing I think makes it feel like you are not on a horrible regime. Hot choc at night also stops those late night sugar cravings - get the 40 cal ones e.g. options.

Also try and do 20 mins or 30 mins of exercise per morning.

Now I will go and follow my own advice

I did bring some artwork for you Wal to hang in your swanky pad. Its a portrait I did of you - it is abstract I admit . It represents the turmoil in your life at preparing that hectic menu (hectic in a rude-boi kinda way).

I just don't like salad - it tastes bitter. And will the prawns still have their heads on. if so can someone else peel the heads and jackets off cos I don't like doing that, I always ping them across the room by mistake :$

You can't fool me, I saw foxy using his wheel to power the salad spinner.

Hi Wal, Can I have a meat alternative to your salad? (sprout)(sprout)(sprout)

I've just seen Foxy the gerbil run across your kitchen surfaces Wal - I thought you were against animal labour in the kitchen!

hmm, don't people sign it electronically now? Maybe you can see who signed it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't 'Mr. Posty'

Still haven't done any work, well I've emailed a few things and checked my questionnaire responses and had a think. I might go and read a book (story book, not phd - specifically twilight :$ )

unfortunately I have done no work so far. I have mainly talked to the plumbers in my house about the horrible old plumbing, praying they can get my new boiler on today after 3 weeks with no heating and also very sleepy because a) am exhausted after running about all week stewarding a large event and b) I have warmed up one room in my house with a portable heater and now am warm and sleepy. So there will be no work done today!

6 out of 10, the plates weren't warmed so the food was cold. But the hosting was good. Who's night is it now?

So much to do, so little time. I have been away far too long with non-PhD work. Today's goals

- read through husband's PhD and find problems for him to sort
- 2 x qual analysis
- definitions of my themes that I found (and change the names a bit)
- take cats to vets for injections

statistical analysis of data- where to learn from?
Avatar for sneaks

hmm, I don't know what a student's test is either and I teach statistics :$

The best way to understand statistcs is to clearly understand what you want to do with your data. Are you comparing groups? if so how many groups? or are you looking to predict an outcome with other variables? Or are you looking to understand what themes are key in a questionnaire?

Once you have VERY clear hypotheses about what you are looking to find out you can then go to a stats book to see which test applies. I would recommend Andy Field's 2009 book. It is very clear and easy to understand and gives you a little chart so you know which test to use in which circumstance.

Geek-tastic presents - what did you get?
Avatar for sneaks

I got a tumble dryer :-( and I got some sticky pads which you put on the bottom of your socks and they keep your feet warm, they are like the thermacare back wraps.

Best present was from husband who gave me every modern adaptation of every classic imaginable (those not already owned) on blu ray/dvd e.g. wuthering heights, bleak house, little dorrit, emma, mansfield park, northanger abbey, sense and sensibility - all bliss!

I also got the twilight books which I am ashamed to say I am addicted to :$

Sneaks wanders into the kitchen while Eska digs fake homemade ice cream out of the Walls tub in the freezer. Sneaks spots the takeaway cartons from the local restaurant and the swinging door of the microwave (down)

Struggling with the reading...
Avatar for sneaks

I never read a book haha. I just write and flick through the book when I need to find something specific out. At the most I will read 3/4 of a chapter out of a book to get the idea of it. Problem is my memory is so bad that there is no point of me just reading it and then going to write about it. I prefer to have the book open on my desk and when I read something of interest just note it down and stick it to my wall for later (if its not related to the thing I am currently working on).

Struggling with the supervisor-phantom academics!

I do sympathise with you. However, I teach on a masters and we have students every year that come into problems with ethics or access to participants. Unfortunately its just the nature of research and extensions are VERY hard to get because these are the problems associated with research and we therefore expect students to be able to adapt and cope with these. Also, we say to all our students, that if you are working and enrolled on a full time course then work interferring with your studies is no excuse, they are enrolled on a FULL time course and therefore shouldn't really be working at the same time.

If I were you I would start data collection asap, and possibly consider changing your method to adapt to your deadlines and write up as much as you can, whilst pursuing the extension route. But you don't want to spend all your time trying to get an extension and for it not to work out. At least if you start the work then it will be on its way to being finished. Good Luck!

I've gone off the snow

the weather forecast for my region - south east says it will brighton up on tues and then stay a lot dry and milder all week, so will probably all be gone by tuesday evening! To be honest, its all dripping off my roof now, although snowing at the same time so that's quite confusing, but its definitely a lot more slushier under foot tonight compared to last night when it was very powdery.
