hmm so far I have

- done a little bit of thematic analysis
- replied to many emails
- talked to annoying person who won't stop ringing me about research
- opened all the parcels that have been delivered by posty and hidden them out of reach of a) dog and b) husband
- started some stats analysis on a non-phd project

Before the day is out I need to

- do work which was result of annoying phone conversation
- thematic analysis
- work out how many transcriptions i have to do
- finish stats and write reports for other project.
- check diary as have found have lots of meeting I forgot to write in it :$

Quote From jojo:

Sneaks - i think your post is quite presumptuos.

1) Where I am from needn't matter.

2) My post has little to do with my kind of phd. And am not doing any interviews FYI.

Sorry Jojo, didn't mean to be presumptuos, although I think maybe where you're from may matter in terms of people's expectations and initial reaction to you, which may have affected (whether consciouly or not and/or rightly or not) their warmth towards you. tbh I only said US, because Jojo sounds a bit american but I suppose I was jumping the gun a little.

I was just enquiring about in what kind of situations (you mention appointments) you have to meet people, which may help us understand a little bit more about how you're feeling.

I know my actual contact with participants was horrendous - I am from the same country, just different ethnicity, age, background and I was very much treated with hostility and suspician. Thank god I have got it over with! But I still experience it when trying to provide feedback to stakeholders :-(

Are you from the US?

Us brits aren't really cold, I guess its just a different style of interaction. What kind of PhD are you doing - who are your participants?

I assume PhD_Smug, isn't PhDbug playing tricks?

Anway, the fish slapping is a bit violent but agree with the sentiment. Smug - your PhD will soon become your other half so don't stress too much!

Welcome Emaa! watch us be totally unaccountable haha.

Teek - I think I feel the same, although I've been logging in no work has actually been done :-(
But the posty has brought a welcome gift - glasses! for £12 - they are better than my originals (ok not really but never mind).

I now have no excuses to get on with work - which is a bit rubbish really.
After the thread on note taking I spent last night getting my one note file organised again. Today

The thematic analysis - this has really gone too far.
I also learnt the man who was going to do some work for me (transcribing)isn't anymore so going to have to do it myself - and try and get some done today.

Its a shame - I really love writing, but can't do that until I have the practical bit out of the way :-s

Tea is in hand - off I go....

I only use Nvivo for coding text for interviews. I guess you could use it for making notes, although you would have to be very consistent with how you did it.

tbh the excel spreadsheet sounds like a good idea - with tabs for each chapter. it depends on how you are going to structure your thesis. It may be that you want to start out with tabs for each theory if you are doing a large lit review for example.

Oh yes, they are bound to ask you the two classics

"why do you want to work in this organisation?"

"why do you want to work in this role?"

To which you spout back at them all the cra p that is on their website.

My hubby had an interview recently and we really worked on playing up his experience. He taught an undergrad module for overseas students, so we rephrased that into a range of skills e.g. 'managing diversity' haha. He got the job and then turned it down (up)

Sorry Teek - I've already rated you which means you'll have to suck up to some newbies if you want another star. Can we ask the Mods to demote Clogs? Maybe he can just have a big troll next to his name?

Ok well you will probably be given a competency based interview at some point. So you will need to have good examples of the old classics

-when you have worked in a team
- worked to deadlines
- had to be organised
- had to persuade or influence someone
- led a team
- communicated well (written and oral)

And anything else you think would be relevant to the job - they may have given you a competency list already, or may have one on a website

To do well in a competency based interview you basically have to follor the CAR technique

Context - what wwas it all about

Action - what was your role? what did you do?

Result - what happened in the end.

ooh and wear something a bit green - apparently you are more likely to be hired!

ah ha the dunce has become the smart one mwahahahaha

Sorry feeling in a very silly mood today.

One note is brilliant - spesh as its always in your toolbar so you can call it up at any time and you can use it for screenprints from there. I daresay the programme is more useful than I will ever discover but I get the basics
