I kinda think the whole climate change thing is a bit odd - why have a small amount of people being banging on about it for years and then suddenly we all have to use different lightbulbs? - lightbulbs that probably take up much more energy making them, and if they break you have to leave the room because they release horrible gases etc.??? - is it cos they want to worry the big oil people? or will the whole matter be dropped after the election??

Not sure about the lift - surely you can just hold on to the rail and therefore just stay where you are when the lift falls?

Question 1: why do people act like the animal they most look like?

My theory - because darwin was half right, but we all evolved from animals - e.g. I evolved from a rabbit, Wal evolved from a lemur - we all turned out human but we look/act a bit like what we evolved from. Ok its not exactly science but its what I like to think!


Question 2: why don't we believe in 'wicked - cool' gods anymore? surely some bloke wielding a hammer is a better explanation for thunder than any meterologists can come up with. And surely worshipping gods like thor, or odin is far cooler than one old bloke with a beard???

In my field, I would do a masters first which would also give you time to understand what a PhD is about and whether you need/want to specialise further.

Maybe its because you feel unless you feel stressed you aren't doing proper work - this is not true! Once you can tell yourself that then you can let your troubles go, like water washing over pebbles in a stream. Yes - I am doped up to the eyeballs on painkillers - yes I'm crazy

maybe we should just scrap the stars and have a number of votes system?

perhaps there should be a certain time between stars. so you receive star 1 and can't receive star 2 until a month later? It seems a little unfair for example Wal that you have been very helpful to me, but i can never vote for you, as I have already voted once. This therefore will probably impact your motivation in being helpful

can i just say that if you are short, the executive chairs often kinda crush you down - everythings all in the wrong place because they were designed by some tall languid designer with rimless glasses.

My cat has also done the same to my chair Wal - he jumps on the back and starts clawing away and hanging off it and then eating my hair - not good. I really want a herman miller one, just need to find one on ebay in the righ location and get a stupid paypal thing set up again

Mods - why is it that you can't vote someone a helpful user more than once? EVER. I can understand not voting for someone twice on the same thread. But years can pass, and perhaps that same person will be helpful again - but you can't vote again :-(

Are we only to be encouraged to be helpful to new users and leave the old faithfulls in a gutter of helplessness?

Thanks Keep_calm - its supposedly for a motivational piece to get people to join a group. I.e. please join our group and step up to the plate! - completely LAME but has to be done. In the end I deleted then put in step up to the plate and then sent it to somoene else who said they were going to re-wrte the whole thing anyway, so im off for the weekend in a huff!

ooh I know what you mean - they put me on anti-epileptic ones (?) and all the usual painkillers - I had to come off them though cos my brain turned to mush and I figured the pain of my back was less than the pain of my PhD not getting done for another X many years!

megara I have spinal stenosis with neurogenic claudication and facet joint syndrome - maybe you have it too and we can be spinal freaks together!

urgh - I have the worst back, after epidurals, spinal disc injections, a piece of metal called an x stop - I still have major issues. I've been away from uni for 5 weeks now. My legs go numb when I walk and my spinal cord gets cut off by my own spine (thanks skeleton - stupid thing) and I don't get any blood to my legs when standing or walking. So this is a real issue for me.

I have recently borrowed a herman miller chair from someone - its lurvely, but when I went to look at buyng my own its like £800!!!!! but then i went to ebay and all my problems were solved - they have them there for v cheap e.g. 99p!

If buying from staples etc. make sure you check the label. Apparently they have brought in labels saying how long you can sit on the chairs for e.g. 3 hours, 8 hours etc.

Wal - do you have friends doing the same PhD area as you? or people in your department that you can relate to?

I know my biggest issue is that before me there was a whole group of cliquey phd students, but they are now 4 years ahead of me, so they load me with patronising advice, but finding someone who is in the same boat as me is very difficult and I always just end up feeling inferior and not worthy to the group of 'successful young female academics' ahead of me. They are lovely, just a little patronising and condescending.
