Quote From teek:

Today was mainly sleeping, with hourly wakings in order to feel depressed and terrified. It's been a bad patch since I finished that practical work :(

But yes, forums, food and general faffing. I'm destined to be a fattened failure, but with excellent social website skills.

come join me with my new passion of accountability - I am updating my thread everytime I get a task done - its quite motivating! And I know how you feel - I have been out of it for a few weeks and feel so awful about it :-(

Sexist supervisor says "too girly"

I think you are confusing 'feminine' with 'girly' - I think he is suggesting you come across a bit meek and immature, rather than suggesting you are coming across too feminine. He is right - stop twiddling with the hair. If you have ever performed music then you will know you have to stand in a certain way and make sure your airways are not constricted i.e. don't fold your arms - have an open demeanor, shoulders straight and confident. Maybe try videoing yourself and see what annoys you about it.

I don't think he is being sexist at all - just trying to point out what is annoying when you are listening/watching a presenter.

I now have an image of pippy long stocking doing a presentation!

my current fav is staring into space - seems to get rid a few hours. Making copious amounts of tea, researching stuff that is not PhD, like medical complaints or whether there has actually been any research on things that are just bizarre or don't matter.

I have had about 4 weeks now of hardly doing anything for my PhD. I have been on very heavy painkillers which have stopped me being able to concentrate on anything. But today I have said enough is enough! I have come off (most of) the painkillers and I am determined to claw back some work before xmas is upon us. So today's list of things to do

1) send out emails for supervisor for another project
2) create presentation for a seminar I am giving next week - which aids data collection for research
3) thematic analysis
4) start a shell/plan for a publication write up.

Avatar for sneaks

Hi Buttercup, I think these may be a bit early for online access (1982) you may have to actually GO to the library! - something I haven't done in four years - good luck, make sure you take supplies and a blanket in case you get lost!

Topic choice
Avatar for sneaks

Hi Ishi,

at the risk of completely revealing my identity, I am an occ psych PhD student. What I would say is that you need an MSc Occ Psych to understand the topics behind a PhD, I don't think many supervisors would take you on without an MSc in occ psych, as you need that to not only have a base knowledge but also to become chartered, which is essential, even as an academic because to teach the occ psych course, they need 1 chartered member of staff per 10 students, so if you want to become a lecturer in the future you will need it. PM me if you like!

Belle de Jour is a Post doc !?!
Avatar for sneaks

hmm what about a job in starbucks!?

I reckon she did it for a few dates, and then decided to make some cash out of the blog. However, although Bristol are supporting her publicly I wouldn't be surprised if her contract was not renewed in 6 months time and she was discretely removed from the premises lol.

Let's write a story together...[the next chapter after stars]

an elf dragging a young man along in shackles, he had a spiky collar around his neck and looked under nourished and somewhat ill.

"Who's that?" Jemima asked

"That, is Phase 2" said her Uncle in a smug tone, "the computer links are not consistent, we only have ideas coming through about once per month, and they tend to be about changing the type spacing to look like more has been written. We need more publications, more idea generation and knowledge transfer to industry to keep Peter the Dark Lord happy. To do this we needed to implement the master plan which consists of three stages, R, E and F - I will tell you what these stand for later, but you need level 8 clearance for that"

Jemima wondered who Peter the Dark Lord was, what the three stages of the master plan were and why the screen in the centre of the room kept on flashing with an image of...

Having it all "not realistic"
Avatar for sneaks

interesting - my parents told me just do as well as I can, as long as I have tried my best then so what? And they also very much advocate happiness over financial gain. My dad gave up his job in the city in the 70s and became a craftsman and he's very successful, although not very well off, but very happy!

I do agree that women can't really have it all, until things like paternity leave and proper flexible working are things that aren't considered lazy options. And people who work flexibly aren't considered second class citizens because they are not in the office all hours.

We have an odd culture where parenting doesn't seem to be a valued profession and if people are to be successful in that, then they need to be supported in their work environment too.

self-funding-snobbery?
Avatar for sneaks

There was a bloke in my department who was a teacher, desparately trying to self fund. They made him take the research methods modules, and because he was only part time, it worked out that to take the research methods modules required would take him the first 2 years of his PhD and as the lectures take up the entire day, there would be no extra time to actually start the PhD. THe last time I saw him he was struggling and looked really depressed about the lack of progress. i haven;t seen him around for a while, so assume he's quit. I really feel sorry for him though as he was so keen! And it makes it worse that I managed to talk myself out of the modules as I had a lot of applicable experience that discounted the use of the taught material.

Happy Birthday Teek!
