hmm I overcame thesis fear by reading other peoples and realising - actually they aren't that good! maybe try paragraph by paragraph

I submited to one journal, which got almost a straight rejection (we were aiming high, to get useful feedback before submitting it elsewhere)

I then got a revise and resumbit, but had to revise it about 3 times I think all in all - it is a much better paper now!

A friend of mine is going for a part time lectureship position. It seems to be equal amounts of teaching/research required. What are the kinds of questions she needs to prepare answers for? and what questions should she ask!?

ooh, I will give it a go - it needs to look reasonably professional and not rely too much on horrible templates with loads of graphics all over them which is all I have come across so far!

I had to prompt the editor to my journal several times. We waited about 3 months and hadn't heard anything, then another 3 months! I think the need a bit of prodding, otherwise your work gets lost in a pile of papers!

I just sent a polite email enquiring about their turn around time, reminding them of the date I had sent mine in on and what the article's ref number was.

I want to make a website for my dad (yes I know procrastination at its best!) I am not very computer literate but get around programmes ok after a few hours.

Is it best to buy dreamweaver - I have seen reviews saying it is overly complex? Or a cheaper package - I have found one called 'Mr Site'

Any recommendations/ideas (and no I can't do HTML etc!)

hmm well that was the plan, until my sup rang me to talk through data, then I had some students emailing for stats help, and now I have to write an intriduction for a seminar we are holding - everything it seems is totally non-PhD! My only solace is that 'call of duty' has arrived in the post - so know I have lots of time tonight as TV will be hogged by OH.

my OH has just got a job, although not yet completed his PhD and he hates it! He is desparate to leave, finish his PhD and get an academic job. He is employes as a specialist in his field, but he is very frustrated because his job turns out to essentially be admin. Its def not worth the money - and he would much rather have the salary of an McDonalds area manager!

An academic job in his field will allow him to go in on the days he decides, plan his own schedule and while not paying much money, will allow us to ENJOY life! His mother said he should just stayi n the job and then he will get paid lots - but news to her - not everyone is motivated by cash! he is motivated by flexible working arrangements and the opportunity to get a new puppy!

Ok - after last week of being a zombie I now need to tackle the thematic analysis today - will report back at lunch time!

i would keep applying gentle pressure so you eventually get what's due - but £14000 is about average or higher than most department funded PhDs - so I wouldn't throw a hissy fit.

Bear in mind that when they do sort this out, you will have a nice lovely windfall. - I am ESRC funded and my industrial partner only pay once invoiced before April - so I get £500 each month for four months to make up for it not going in to my account during the year. I love those four months! :-x

I am not sure how you would include the 'over time' bit. it may be that you can run the regression twice (time 1, time 2) and then compare beta values.

urgh- I never read anything all the way through. I know its different for MSc - in that you HAVE to read certain papers. But generally I tend to skim read the abstract, then if it is of interest, then skim the intro, then the discussion. If I really want to use the paper I will look in more detail. I rarely read results unless I am VERY interested in the paper, and I only read a method in order to critique the paper or replicate the method.

Sounds like you are getting a bit too bogged down in reading. How about just writing a few notes about the intro, method, results and discussion and then some overall critical points. then move on!
