Well done bug! Sounds like you aced it - I expect the speaker really did want your slides (although watch it in case there is suddenly a publication out by him in a few months using your ideas!).

Have you thought about doing your presentations to undergrads before you go - so you can ensure that non-niche people will understand. As I am from a music background I find that a metronome can help you slow down your talking speed - just have it ticking in the background to remind you to go slower.

yeah - but I have just written my lit review and I am starting my 3rd year - so I am sure she will just say I need to stop writing rubbish and get on with it lol. Oh well - I only get about 2 sup meetings a year so after that I can hide again until after xmas.

It may be good just to acknowledge reviewer 1's standpoint e.g. I am approaching it like this, others approach it like that, but this is why my approach is better. - although I am social sciences so I would back all this up with a million references, I don't know if you do that in other subjects !?

Yeah - I have become an avid user of 'google docs' where I have put all my writing. I just have to worry about things like my interview sound files etc. that are too big to email - so they are on four computers, two external hardrives and now on DVD-R - that should cover it lol.

unfortunately it is my own pc - so I would have to pay. it is only about one and half years old but seems to have gone crazy since I moved house - I suspect something got knocked out of place when moving it. I have just bought a new laptop - so I can work its just I need to ensure everything is backed up about 20 times as I can't trust the PC anymore.

I think it must depend on the subject area though. I guess in the end its what makes it readable - put yourself in the place of the poor external who has to wade through it all. I have a meeting with my sup on monday who will probably tell me my whole summer of writing was a complete waste of time - oh well!

I posted on lit review length last week and was shouted at and told mine was too long :-(

My lit review (draft version) will be about 60,000 words, but it looks like my final version will be more like 30-35,000. I have no idea about methods chapters/analyses. I tend to be quite succinct so I can imagine a struggle to expand them with stuff I don't feel is necessary.

I think its ok to ask for others help - but be strategic about who you ask. e,g, ask someone who has a lot of their OWN publications, who won't want to be tagged onto yours. Professors are professors for a reason i.e. they have been strategic about publications and bringing in money - they will want to surf in on yours too! I tend to ask more junior members of staff - or send it in to the best journal in your field, just to get some feedback before you send it to other journals.

No - I'm kind of used to it, my other half likes playing games like 'manhunt' - which is surprisingly not about the gay scene, more about randomly killing everyone in gruesome ways!

I have spent the last week dealing with constant computer problems :-s

The stupid thing won't start up everytime and today it decided the external hard drive would lose all my PhD data - luckily I fooled it using another computer and am now backing up all the data onto DVD-Rs - but have spent soooo much time messing around with them, my supervisor will never believe me that it has taken me all morning (and all week!) :-s

you could of course edit the text in places to make it obvious what your contribution was e.g. 'the primary author sent out questionnaires', 'the primary author analysed the data' - of course this is quite childish but would serve them right lol.

in my field its usual to include supervisors as authors, when publishing PhD work -because they kind of own the project too. It may be that yours are unhelpful which unfortunate, but it won't change the assumption that they should be on it.

If it were me, I wouldn't kick up a fuss - its more hassle than its worth in that you will still be first author. Next time, only ask one person to look through it though! I have been told specifically not to let people check through publication submissions because of this.

Or write a note about how you hate your subject area, but are happy to be paid for basically writing a book about something and watching jeremy kyle, while others are being sacked from thier high paid banking jobs haha. (don't get too smug in your 3rd year otherwise it will come back to bite you!)

my husband has just gone into full time work and is finishing off his PhD. He saves up flexi time, so he can take off 2 days a month to do PhD work (so he combines it with a weekend to get 4 solid days) - although he works very quickly so 4 days is enough. He also puts one evening aside each week to get work done. Then he relies on me to proof read and point out any problems he needs to sort out :-(

he is also using all his leave to do PhD work - but its only 1 year.
