I think it was supposed to be motivational - my sup does it all the time and it gives me a kick up the **** in terms of my work. PhDs can become so isolated and its good to hear what others are doing. However, do remember that some subjects/topics lend themselves to publication much more than others. It could be she just submitted a draft of a chapter to a journal etc and it got accepted, whereas you would have to completely re-write it.

Also think about quality of publication. My Sup says that every 'good' publication i.e. high impact factor journal, is worth 4 or 5 bad publications.

Over the weekend I managed to get some non-PhD, but still important work completed. I haven't yet finished this chapter section I am trying to write, so that is the main aim this week! THe main prob I have is that my Sup wants me to write, but I keep getting great opportunities to meet up with my organisational partner - which if I turn down will affect the success of the rest of the practical side of my PhD, so I end up going to meet with these peopel and not writing - and you know how important these meeting are A116!

Anyway, got until thus at home this week so going to try and et this bit done and move on!

Over the last few months I have found that it gets easier. I am finally understanding all the terms which are used across journals so makes it a whole lot easier!

Done about a paragraph so far - its taking Aaaages! but at least I am doing it! Just annoyed that I am going to have to spend all day tomorrow doing other stuff, just at the point that I was finally 'in the zone' for writing stuff. :-s

Same as yesterday + have to revise some work for teaching tomorrow.

Best way is to look at other peoples theses in your uni/area of research. One of the most important things is that it is easy to read. You mentioned how regularly to refer the reader to ohter parts of the thesis - I would say not too often. Imagine reading something where you are constantly having to flick backwards and forwards to understand something. Your examiners will thank you if you make it clear and well layed out in the first place.

Decided that I need to finish this 1st section by weds evening, then move on. My Sup wants to see something and doesn't care I dont' think about the quality. I think she is just concerned she has not seen anything yet, so better to get it all to her, than just a few perfect paragraphs!???

Aaaargh! Oh well, i must plug away at it. Think I have broken my eyes by looking at screens for the last year cos I can hardly read my journals - need to go get them checked I think. In the mean time, zooming everything up to 200% :p

Today went rather badly - migrain and v tired, gave up at about 2pm. Found that the first section I have to write is going to take me the entire 2 weeks I have booked off to do writing (as in write the entire lit review) so will have to work super hard tomorrow. If I can just plan it out and then fill in the gaps it would be easier. Feeling frustrated now!

hmm, kinda meant, in terms of planning list for the year would be

- get literature review done by march
- finish second study


etc etc, so very broad aims of things to do. Just to make sure things are getting done, when you look back. I find the best way is a4 bits of paper on my wall - doing these things on a screen never seems real so if its sat above my monitor I start to worry and want to cross things off.

Could be because you have a BA and MA, most psychology is BSc MSc, so maybe they feel that you don't have the scientific background. You need to be tartgeting specific jobs as well, not just general psychology RA positions - you need to look at gender for example and go from there.

been very busy all last week and away from my computer a lot. This week I am doing writing writing writing. So my goals for today are to plan my lit review out and write the first section, or maybe two depending on how things go.
