i'm in psych too. I tend to read the abstract, intro and discussion of all papers and then any that I want to look at in detail, I will then read methods and results. Easier that way!

I would imagine that he would not allow anything to happen between you. Therefore, to stop yourself just imagne that huge amount of embarrassment you will feel when he rejects your advances lol (so jane austen). He sounds like a fab supervisor - don't mess it up! ANyway, if it did work out your PhD would go down the drain as all your meetings turned into romantic meetings lol, you would soon be on your 20th year of trying to write up!

i'm on my diet so no sunday roasts until xmas day! and even then am going to avoid roasties I think.

I am in quite a small department, they wanted me to teach last year, but I am research council funded so don't have to officially and my sup is quite protective. My phd involves a lot of work with my industrial partner so she tries to make sure that I am not getting loads put on me from all angles. THis also means that she knows how much I have on at any one time, so she knows when I have just been plain lazy! :$

Have to say Scared, that I know people who have computer programs written for them/with them and even if its only a few days of help they tend to offer a co-authorship on all related publications/conference presentations. If it were me, I would offer the bloke this as an olive branch. I can kinda see why he;s annoyed.

Sorry, been away for a few days - been at uni trying to wind things down for xmas and make sure everything is fine for me to leave. Decided to pre-empt my sup by phoning her (as she has already left for xmas) to make sure that she knows what I;ve been doing (and leaves me alone until after xmas). Main aim before my parents descend on my house is to complete the intro chpater - how many days/weeks has this dragged on now! Seriously would like to finish this before Monday.

I also have my first ever lectures to give next term so want to prepare seriously by reading appropraite material and putting slides together as well!!

Ah, think I am giving up for the night. Done a load of admin and preparing for a big meeting tomorrow, so done all that and going to sort out my bag (like I am at school :p ) for tomorrow and then veg for the evening! The practical research side is stressing me out too much today, so I can't get on with the writing side. Life as a 2nd year!?

Can you offer your 'friend' a co-author on the paper you are going to publish - maybe this is what he wants as he thinks he helped you so much. And you could still retain lead author??

No not that impressive! I do consultancy work as well which gets publications so I get a name on it cos I do all the admin etc. lol

I've done a few co-authored pieces. My first big one, i.e I was the one who wrote it all and did all the physical research, I am currently working on. My sup keeps changing mind on whether I should write for publication or thesis so I tend to start, then stop then start thesis writing, then stop then start publication again etc. etc.

I think my writing style has definately improved by resubmitting and working on other papers though so guess I will wait and see

Did your supervisor give you a clear publishing strategy? At the mo mine is

Submit to a really high impact factor journal, with slight hope it may get accepted, but mostly just to get useful comments, then submit to lower and lower impact factor journals, depending on how often it gets rejected lol. (obviously making changes along the way as suggested).

I know other people prefer to work from low impact factor to high, but you need a clear strategy!

To Do lists and planning, as mentioned before but have:

1 for the whole year
1 for the month
1 for the week
1 for the day
possible 1 for the hour!

my advice would be to look at your colleagues' theses. Have you got anyone in your department who submitted in the last few years? if so have a flick through theirs and see how they approached it.
