Statistical tests - Within-subjects for categorical data

ok so if you want to see if there are significant differences between 4 conditions, where the same participants are in every condition, then you could use a repeated measures ANOVA or a MANOVA

Goal 1 done, scary people phoned.

Goal 2 - find glasses and read through drafts.

urgh, scary people aren't picking up - I hate it when you build yourslef up to phone someone and they aren't there, so you have to hang around all nervous until you can get through!

- start working out what I need to do for Chapter 3.

THen I have chapter 4,5,6 to re-draft and then chapter 7 to write from scratch by 30th!!!!! ARGH!

mixed methods question
Avatar for sneaks

Thanks all, I think I might hire you Wal to be my personal epistemology expert!

I'm using a complicated sort of coding, to say more would give myself up, but its basically coding statements in terms of how they match 10 things. So each statement gets 10 scores based on a likert scale and then you can play around with the stats e.g. compare groups, predict outcomes based on these scores etc. PM me if you want to know specifics :p

mixed methods question

Thanks Wal, that's what I thought. I'm having an argument with my sup who thinks its a purely quantitative study.

However, I've gone with 'constructivism' not 'interpretivisim???' :$ so I'm saying I'm using 'storytelling' (constructivist) type methods for the qual stage and then analysing them quantitatively.

I analyse this data qualitatively and then do a quantitative questionnaire study later, so I know I do do mixed methods, its just this particular study, which I think within itself is a mixed methods study - she thinks not :-s

yeah - what is axiological??

Equations in word AAAGH!
Avatar for sneaks

my hubs had issues with this, but particularly when saving docs as 'old' word and then 'new' word - it would change the equations and faff about with it. Maybe try saving it as a 'compatible' i.e. old-word version or new-word version and see what happens?

mixed methods question

If you had done interviews with participants, that were quite open ended i.e. 30-40 minute discussion about their love of x factor, then coded the interviews with numerical codes and analysed those statistically....

is that a mixed methods study? or a quantitative study?

ooh that's awful! I hate the attention seeking nature of facebook. WHat she really meant was 'I'm going to show off by saying that....'

Taking a break from PhD for an Internship

then I'd contact the EPSRC and ask if they have a similar scheme - if so ask if this organisation can become a member of the scheme, so its legit.

the ESRC offer internships for students - you can take them during the summers of each year if you choose to do it - its a whole scheme, so you could contact EPSRC to see if they run a similar scheme, because that would mean that your funding gets put on hold i.e. you add 3-6 months of funding onto the end of your PhD to make up for the time in the internship.

I've never done one, my hubby works in an organisation who takes interns from ESRC on though. I think its a great opportunity, but you'll have to be very clear with the funding body, you'll also have to be clear about what stage you are in your research, who owns the work you do while you're in the internship, don't give away your PhD ideas (they may want to poach them!), don't be taken for a mug (i.e. being basically an underpaid consultant). Importantly, no matter how big the name, don't let it sway you too much, because they will be out for cheap labour/intelligent ideas really, so you've got to be careful about the ownership of your work.

Much more relieved now. Just spoken to my sup who said its great - was a bit worried she'd 'hulk-out' and refuse to let me be on the papers we'd put together or something equally disastrous, but she was really happy! (or at least appeared to be over the phone).

:-)

Now I must focus (which is really difficult!) on the PhD
