I have done so little so far! I really really want to get this section done today though. I may ignore student emails to try and get it done.

yeah its one of those things, there is someone who could do the teaching, but she's snapping at my heels. If I don't get the job I'm going for in 2 weeks, I won't want to give her my 'niche' in the department, so it means I really have to do the teaching to keep hold of it.

If I can get my first chapter re-worked today I think I'll start to feel happier, it all seems so much out of control!

I really just want to sit in a room and cry. I've just had to book another 2 days off for teaching this week and have had a load of requests for non-PhD work to be done urgently :-(

I'm feeling utterly overwhelmed at the moment and very stresse. I'm supposed to be in the final week or 2 of writing up - submission early sep. But I've also got 4 days of work I promised somoene to do, at the time to get some extra cash, but didn't receive the work until last week so now have to do that and can't back out :-( also have about 300 students on my back wanting feedback etc. and also have an interview to prepare for.

I'm going to try and spend 9-5 on my PhD today and really make some headway and get Chapter one done and dusted. THen 5-late I'll start work on the student and other stuff I have to do.

Well I've looked through 5 theses from my department - all gap, no indent. So I think sup must be living in the days of the typewriter or something. I don't like indents, I think it looks odd so am going with gap :-)

no, especially as stereotyping is a big part of my thesis and to point out this person might not be grammatically correct, kinda looks like I'm doing some stereotyping myself.

to indent or not to indent at the beginning of paragraphs?

My sup likes it, I don't and I was wondering what common convention is.

I have a quote at the beginning of my thesis.

I have to have it - it sums up the whole issue very well, but it has a grammatical error (according to my mum lol) so do I correct it or not - its going to be in the starting paragraph so a little bit concerned. it is (well along the lines of)

"THe world is like an iceberg where there are a small amount* of penguins on the surface, but many more down below, swimming in the sea, dodging polar bears"

*my mum reckons this should be 'number'

GOal 2 done.

Goal 3 is to re-do all the stats in chapter 1 based on the digging for updated stats I've been doing this morning.

I'm feeling pretty crappy about the whole thing now. Sup has chosen harsh examiners for her own political reasons and now has admitted that it will be a hellish viva. :-( everyone else in my department have got away with having vivas with friends of the department who are lovely, and no matter what the kudos may be of having these examiners - I'd rather pass!

goal 1 done and I've done a few other bits.

Goal 2 to find file on external hard drive and incorporate results from it into intro.

I also have to re-write a qualitative finidngs section, because even though I've sent it to her 8 times, she's NOW decided that its not right and I need to move things around and bring more out of the text. Great. I get the feeling she thinks its really motivating for me and its some kind of crappy management technique she thinks will get me finished, but I'm not like her other supervisees, I don't thrive under that kind of supervision - I'd much rather been told to make these changes 10 months ago.

Well, I have 20 days to change my entire thesis, I have loads of little changes, but also about 6 HUGE structural ones e.g. changing the whole layout and argument of the lit review (AGAIN). I really don't think this is possible, but will try my best. Not helped that I'm out all day tomorrow and have a wedding to go to on saturday :-s

Today goal 1: amend graph with up to date statistics.

I learnt to trust my instincts, one of my biggest lessons has been that my supervisor is only a person and although has been useful at some points has misguided me and I wish I had been more assertive or learnt to ignore her sooner!
