Does anyone have access to the 'Journal for Labour Market Research' for 2011?

help with lit review table
Avatar for sneaks

Thanks DrJeckyll, I'm really thinking far less in depth though. So rather than individual papers, talking about areas of research. So for example, if I was doing research on maltesers consumption and obesity in PhD students, I could have the areas of ...

Chocolate
Eating at work
addiction to malty treats

and then having a table that demonstrates that, in general, these areas have had theoretical work and/or empirical evidence. Literally, just a tick to say what they have covered.

Does that make sense? is it too general? I'd present it before going on to talk about each area.

Transcribing interviews

from memory, transcription buddy has an option to have noise cancellation which may work, its quite similar to audacity I think in that it plays back the noise frequencies to cancel them out. Probably worth a try.

I'd second transcription buddy - go to the view menu, and in options there is an option to put in 'automatic pauses' which means the track loops (at the speed you set it) so you never have to press pause/play (if you get your timings right for the speaker's speed)

Guidelines for amount of qualitative data

I have 40 interviews and then I also have a questionnaire with 350 respondents. I think it just depends though - I know someone who had 5 interviews but analysed the life out of them and get the PhD.

How many typos can you get away with?!!

I've read quite a few theses (not in their entirety) on ethos that have hundreds of typos in. I've also read through 3 from my own department who passed with no corrections that are just awful! (So wishing I had the same examiners!)

To continue with PhD or not!!

from the uni's point of view, they've put resources and time into you so far, so its better for them that you finish. In that sense I'd say its worth going to them and asking for a payment plan you can manage or some teaching work.

Alternatively, you could take out a loan like a career development loan, which are meant to cover course fees.

ooh this sounds encouraging. Has anyone seen any examples in journals or anything you could point me to?

ANy help with wording the caveat? :p I know I'm being cheeky, but at the end of my tether with it all now!

sorry - to make sense of this the table would be ...

Theoritical papers ....................Empirical Papers

X ................. (up)................................ (down)

Y ..............(up)

Z .................(up)

Hahaha is this making any sense to anyone?

help with lit review table
Avatar for sneaks

I want to put a table in my lit review, that indicates that while there is a load of research on topics x y and z, some of these have only theorised about 'population A' but some of them have empirical evidence about 'population A'

I was thinking about putting x y and z vertically and then having 2 columns - one for theoretical, one for empirical, and putting ticks next to them (is this making sense?) where there is research.

Obviously, though - if the examiners know of 1 paper that goes against my ticks, that I've missed, then I could be in trouble.

Has anyone done anything similar, or can think of a way of adding a caveat to say something like 'obviously there may be one or two papers out there' :$

I've thought about doing a search for papers in the areas and then reporting search result numbers, but tbh, I don't think it would add anything and is dodgy cos the search terms would probably come back with loads of irrelevant results.

theoretical position
Avatar for sneaks

ah yes, you see I was clear on it when I wrote the chapter, now my sup has come back and said I'm not specific enough about things and I keep on saying "approach" rather than epistemology/paradigm/theoretical perspective. I'm so confused now!

And then I read a paper that said that pragmatism isn't an epistomology, but a paradigm. And now I'm really confused!

theoretical position

my supervisor has just questioned this in my write up. I now am totally confused about the difference between...

- epistemology
- ontology
- paradigm
- theoretical stance
- methodology
- methods

My brain will explode and I can't find anywhere that explains this!

well spent the last hour getting the courage to ring sup to go through changes and then she's not in :-s

Papers/Posters with supervisor?
Avatar for sneaks

I actually submitted an abstract 2 days ago, which has been accepted at a conference. i nearly missed the deadline, so sup didn't see it. I emailed her and said "I've just put in an abstract to this conference" and she just assumed her name would go on it, as the reply read "can I have the full details for my webpage please" so I guess that means I have to put her on it haha! Oh well. I think its whether you are 1st author really counts with these things.

Papers/Posters with supervisor?

I do, unless my supervisor thinks its not something worth her while i.e. the conference isn't high profile enough :p
