yeah, no I find it really difficult - I fall back in to the whole meek thing far too easily. I find it very difficult to boast or at least confidently talk about my research - I generally prefer to be modest so it feels alien to me. I think I've lost some jobs cos of it, so trying to improve!

For me, I think I need to learn (and am trying to) to come across less like meek-student, but confident-early-career-lady. To do this I focus more on my 'research interests' rather than 'what I did on my PhD' talk about other projects, ideas for future reserach, how I will contribute towards the REF, even if they don't ask - so it looks like I've got clear strategy, I won't need babysitting etc.

If you get one, I'll probably hate you a little bit, cos I want to do one too! Mainly to watch zebras though :-x

BBC wildlife magazine often has research opportunitie in the back - may be a good start. THere's a conservation department that does lots of practical work called the durrell institure I think? http://www.kent.ac.uk/dice/

In my field people often just put something like "all lines are bi-directional" under models that look like flow-diagrams

she's 7, so it involves going to school and back. Hubby is here in the evenings so he can help.

I'm having an odd week. I realised on sunday that another deadline is due tomorrow, and I haven't done any of the work for it. so I blocked out today to do it, but then there's been a family illness, meaning that I'm left looking after a little girl for the rest of the week, so haven't started work yet. Its just started raining though, so that's good - hopefully it will get cooler :-)

anyway, PhD is taking a back seat until I can do this work!

I've done everything but wash the dog - including driving to london and back, the dog will have to stay dirty. Now just got to change re-make-up myself and go to this evening thing - I have 30 mins to do that and find hubby's PSP so he'll be entertained tomorrow, he is like a small toddler

Right, I have done:

- finish findings section
- add in the discussion I've already written
- iron 4 shirts
- put clean-clothes-mountain away
- Pack a bag for 5 days for hubby to work next week
- Pack a different bag for me and hubs for this weekend
- wrap presents

I still have to:

- print out so can read over and work on issues over the weekend.
- wash the dog
- hoover entire house
- clean bathrooms and kitchen
- have another shower

All before 4pm, then...

- drive 2 hours to pick hubs up
- go out to a birthday dinner

a pancake ship!? :-x

*books flight to bremen*

Personally I'd go on the supervisor reputation in terms of how well their research is received, any recommendations from previous students, rather than the institution.

oh that's awful Moonblue :-( All I can say is that in my experience, its often for the best, much better than seeing them suffer :-( :-(

haha - he lives away mon-fri, and cos we're having to go away this weekend he won't actually come home, so having to pack bags for his next week away, which he usually does on a sunday. But no in general he doesn't do housework, the deal is he works and pays for me to faff about finishing this blimmin thesis. When I'm a famous lecturer (or just have some kind of full time job) we WILL be getting a cleaner :p

How many words for qualitative findings?
Avatar for sneaks

OK, another question....

So far I've been explaining the themes - and then adding in block quotes - between 50-150 words to provide examples of what I'm going on about. On these sections I've just put the quote, followed by (Participant 20).

But now I'm thinking, as well as that, I may want to include 1-3 case studies, well not case studies, but longer quotes, where someone has gone through a whole example, more like 350 words. so....

1) can I do that? or should I be consistent in how I'm showing the info?
2) should I give the person a name? or just stick to 'participant 11' or something - I can't name them all, as I have 40, so thought I might give a fake name to just the 3 longer quoted/case study people?
