Do supervisors get a wink and a nod?
Avatar for sneaks

I would imagine it would depend on the relationship between them. My likely external knows my sup quite well so *may* give her an indication. Although in someways I'd rather assume he would never do this, otherwise if you haven't had a nod and a wink off your sup you might panic going into it!

Also, although I assume 99% of their mind is made up pre-viva, I guess some people might base the whole thing on the actual performance you give during those 2 hours or so (Gulp!)

I need to have a talk...

I tend to agree with the let-it-happen thoughts.

I'd find it a bit weird if someone tried to talk to me about what was happening next rather than just doing it, if you know what I mean. I also think it takes the romance out of it all - its a bit like saying "ok, so I really like you, so tomorrow at 2.34 I will kiss you - be prepared" rather than just giving them a smacker on the lips! :$

Do you have to attend conferences?
Avatar for sneaks

I find conferences dull, but I see their point i.e. networking etc and to practice presenting.

However, if you're self funding then I agree with Bilbo, they are SO expensive - the one I've just skived was about £500 just for registration - over 3 days, so need to factor in a few extra £hundred for accommodation, travel and food.

What I've done in the past is send in a poster - sometimes send it with a friend, they put it up, you get the thing to put on your cv but often you don't actually have to be there. Having said that some conferences won't put it up unless you're there to stand next to it.

Presenting preliminary findings - Help please!

I pull out a few quotes - gets people to wake up a bit in my experience! Maybe one for each theme?

There's 3 academic posts come up - although realistically I'd only have a shot at 2, but will apply for all of them.

THere's one non-academic post come up and I applied and am in the selection process of another non-academic one (hence the psychometric test).

I don't really want a non-academic post but I am literally a begger now, so I can't be a chooser :p

my job update emails tell me that there are at least 2 posts (1 academic 1 not) I need to apply for today, and I already have 2 others I need to apply for. Please let 1 of them come through!!!

I've also not been rejected (yet!) for the one I had a psychometric test for on monday (although I'm SO bad at them I reckon I've failed)

What do you wish you were good at?

Sneaks - to me you seem like that kind of person, don't you walk your dog at 7am or something, then do your RA work, then do your PhD in the evening? I think that's pretty good going!

well I get up at 6.30 and stagger about the park with a squeaky ball as my dog chases squirrels - but I'd hardly say I'm in my peak of physical form :$ . And yes I do do RA work and then PhD at the moment, but I procrastinate so much during the day, I hardly get anything done :-(

Quote From eska:

I wish I were good at making money. That is one thing I have managed to avoid all my life - I just cannot motivate myself for financial gain, but I reckon life would be a lot easier and more fun with it!

I worked as a recruitment manager once and that wasn't badly paid; it could have earned me a decent amount of money eventually - enough for a marble topped kitchen work surface and two foriegn holidays a year. But I felt as if my very self were fast disappearing on the horizon - so I packed it all in and went into v.poorly paid jobs in education.

its not worth it! my father in law earns about £400k a year (and before you ask, no we don't see ANY of it booooo) and he's seriously not someone to aspire to. He never sees his little girl and spends all hours shmoozing away, which after the first 2 weeks, must be VERY dull. Money doesn't make you a nice or interesting person!

I'd like to be one of those people who can get up at 5am, go to the gym for 2 hours, go to work, come back, clean the house, make a home cooked dinner from scratch (no jars!) and iron everything and then put in some hours on the PhD. But I've realised I will never be that person. If I can do 1 of those things in a day then I'm doing well :-)

I'd say actions speak louder than words :p

who do you share your work with?
Avatar for sneaks

ah yeah, my mum does grammar-proof everything, as beyond what a verb and a noun are, I'm pretty stumped with all that!

ooh thank you cakeman and walminksi - I may well take you up on that offer (you may regret this!) I'm working my way through my methodology (which is kind of a theoretical review, mixed methods justification and context mish-mash) so should have finished that in the next week.

I might try hard-copies with my sup, good idea. I still have the trouble of her not reading anything (ever!) all the way through. I've just submitted a journal article with her as 2nd author to a good journal and she just said "well I haven't read the results or discussion.." What!?? :-s

I'm SO jealous bug! I want someone like that :-(

I'm finding that I want someone to read through my work. Now obvious choice is supervisor, but she tends to delete/change stuff as she goes (rather than reading it once and then going back) so she'll delete half of it and then not read the other half because she's got confused :-s

Anyway, its got to the point where I won't send her any work at all - I want to wait until its finished before she can tamper.

But I want someone else to see if what I'm writing makes sense. My hubby hasn't got a clue (even though he's just about to submit his own) and I can't think of anyone else :-(

This is why I'm running mine through turn it in!

Does anyone know if the 'Turn-it-in' software is safe to upload the thesis onto, ie I am worried about copyrights etc so wouldn't want my thesis being used by anyone else prior to my submission and defence. I am probably very paranoid about this as realistically who would want my thesis, let alone defend it lol.

actually I don't know - but would be worth checking before running it. Does the programme steal the info (i.e. to compare to other peoples stuff later on?)
