Quote From ady:

you're the fastest replier in the west, Sneaks!!

It just demonstrates that I have the best procrastination skills in the WORLD!

Emmaki - please 'star' these people - they are wonderfully helpful users, but not very good procrastinators. :p

I think my sup is away for half term = less pressure for RA work :-)

I've spent the morning food shopping, walking the dog and taking a horrible assessment test for a job which I have BLATANTLY failed Oh well, it was a non-academic job that would be pretty nasty anyway (keep telling yourself that sneaks!)

So plan for today..

- eat something (ravenous after stressful test)
- make tea (am very cold!)
- run a confimratory factor analysis and report results
- do correlation table
- report descriptives
- run reliability checks on all items and report

If I do all that today, then I can get on with my PhD for the rest of the week (up)

would you apply?

Thanks for the advice Ady, I will apply tonight then (up)

I think my cv and covering letters are great (if I don't say so myself lol) every job I apply for I get an interview - its when they meet me in person it all goes to pot, I must be a right let down haha! - or, possibly its the fact that EVERY job I've been for has had an internal candidate sitting in the waiting room with the rest of us mugs :-(

would you apply?

I'm in the final stages of my write up, I NEED a job.

There's a senior lecturer job going in my field (£45k ish). Now obviously I reckon I am WAY under-experienced for that. They said they want someone with a PhD and publications (I have 1 and have about 6 in prep - some going to v top journals).

Should I apply? Hubby says I should as they advertise for the best and take what they get ;-)

I just feel a bit 'big for my boots' doing so :$

Google Scholar help please

on google scholar, you should be able to go to the right hand side of the page and put your university under the list in 'scholar preferences' - you can also say you want to import the citations to a certain citation manager e.g. in endnote.

Once you've done that you can go back into your search and any journals you have access to will then come up with a link to your university on the right - which takes you straight to the full text pdf. There will also be a link to import the citation to your chosen program (e.g. endnote)

Sometimes in chrome I find that the pdf doesn't want to save or something, so I skip over to internet explorer instead.

Google books doesn't work like this - that's just a view on the page kinda thing. - rubbish!

Mixed methods

wow you all know your stuff! (want to write a methods chapter???)

I *think* I'm a pragmatist then (up) (will obviously read more on it!)

I reckon I can get away with it because my research is VERY applied (and therefore can justify using mixed methods) so it sounds about right.

Mixed methods
Avatar for sneaks

ooh ok from my brief readings I have these questions

1) can you be mixed methods and be anything other than a pragmatist?

2) what role does a pragmatist take as a researcher - in positivist I assume that I see the same as everyone else, but constructavism says depending on who you are you might see different stuff going on (that's my understanding anyway) so where's pragmatism on this?

3) once you've identified your stance, do you bang on about it later on, or do you just mention it in the methods and just get on with reporting the results 'as usual'

Mixed methods

ok, I'm not even sure I want to know what a 'classical' pragmatist is.

I'm getting the impression from Creswell's book you CAN'T do mixed methods and be anything but a pragmatist - is this right?

I'm reading a mixed methods approach from another person in my department, but she claims she's positivist - although looking at her argument it makes me think she is actually a pragmatist but probably didn't realise that that exists??

thanks pink numbers. I've also got a struggle categorising previous theories in my field. I can't find anything that says XYZ theory is positivist for example, so I'm just having to guess - and feeling uneasy about it!

I've just downloaded the creswell book. I've read a few pages and now think I'm a pragmatist. So confusing!

I'm not supposed to be doing PhD work today either!

ooh Ill have a look at all these. I've just had help from walminkski from the past - searched through my emails and there's a book he sent me a while ago :-)

I still haven't chosen my 'stance' though - which is probably awful for this stage in the research. I think I'm a positivist (?)

Thanks Ady! I'm dreading this bit, I think its going to be the worst bit of the entire thesis to write :-(
