advice needed on learning R
Avatar for sneaks

it depends what field you're in and what you need to do with it. I have an office mate who only uses Matlab and claims its going to take over SPSS - which I doubt. I mainly use SPSS (which now does a lot of the stuff R was needed for e.g. bootstrapping) and I also use AMOS and Mplus for structural equation modelling.

But if you're only going to need to do a t-test or something then you might as well stick to SPSS.

you need to say where you live. In london it wouldn't go very far!

I have no idea! I've now written a non-tehnical version, but still with an overview (i.e. general research problem) and then by study. I think what she's getting at, is what does it add to the field. I don't really get why the bloke has to see this anyway. :-s I wouldn't be surprised if it was her lame-ass attempt of getting me to think more about the overall contribution - but I hate being tricked like that so if it is I'll be in a right mood!

I have to re-do my 1 page :-( but not really sure how, apparently it has to be more technical, but I don't really get why. And I'd structured it around my 3 studies, and apparently it just has to be an overview of the thesis - not by study :-( so confused!

I had to do modules in my 1st year - but I got out of some of them with exemptions because I'd already covered the content elsewhere (and had evidence for that). So you could try that.

Otherwise I have no advice - are they pass/fail? if so do the bear minimum!

edited because I'm not sure if its bear or bare???? no bear doesn't sound right. eurgh SPSS has mangled my brain

thanks guys! Its been rejected before from top top top level journals (x2) but for silly reasons - once cos of something my sup put in (she said the findings found that xyz - when they didn't! but she wouldn't let me take it out) and the second cos of the sample size (which is unavoidable and I've not justified it a lot more strongly)

So fingers crossed!

Help with tracking changes (Vista)!

erm, maybe just close the document and don't save - then re-open it (assuming it hasn't autosaved or you've saved in the meantime and you won't lose data)

Done the 1 page (well its 2 pages) overview for external. - getting butterflies already and haven't even written the thesis!

Next Goal (although I'm sure I'll be called for lunch in a mo) is to do the work I'm actually supposed to be doing today i.e. non-PhD work!

woop - I've just submitted my article :-)

Next step - I have to produce a 1 page summary of my PhD for a potential external examiner :-( I've been putting it off for about 2 weeks now, so have to get one with it!

If you're submitting to a journal and the abstract word limit is 100-200 words and your abstract is extremely well written (if I don't say so myself, lol) but is 220 words, what would you do?

Cut it, or assume that your within 10% and it'll be fine??

First goal

- proof read article and submit to journal :-)
