Can anyone make sense of this sentence?
Avatar for sneaks

gawd I hate sentences like that. If you want to PM me the article though I could have a look. I've done a lot of attribution stuff for my PhD.

ok, she's now sent me an email apologising for all the emails lol - although that's got me quite scared that she might be lurking on here :$

Button, I have 3 and a half stone to lose :-( and I need to lose at least 2 stone by May cos I'll be a bridesmaid and don't want to look awful in all the photos. What kind of dress have you gone for?

Another little Endnote question
Avatar for sneaks

do you mean having Weiner (2006) as opposed to (Weiner, 2006)?

The only way I know how to do it is to insert citation (weiner, 2006) and then remove author and then manually type it next to the bracket.

If there is a better way please someone let me know as this winds me up no end ;-)

ok I am feeling slightly panicked now, I was going to put aside today to sort out and plan the next month of work. I've just had 4 emails from sup asking for work now and then she wants to call me later today argh! - this is all non-PhD stuff she wants to talk about and I really wanted to focus on PhD stuff today :-(

Hi All I hope you all had good Christmasses and New Years (up)

I haven't done ANY work on my PhD since about mid-december. I have A LOT to catch up on, but also other work, a lecture to plan, writing up some related, but non-PhD work and a tax return to do :-(

So my first goal today is in two parts

a) don't get overly panicked by the amount of work
b) make a list of all I've got to do for today, the week and then the month

and I have a soar throat and feeling a bit urgh

is anyone on the Christmas mood?
Avatar for sneaks

no :-( I tried - I put up our tree two days ago. But what with work and PhD and being completely skint and having to spend the day at my father in law's its a bit rubbish this year. Hopefully next year will be better!

journal re-prints?

I have an article that was originally published in 1986, but was re-issued/printed in 2004.

Which date do I reference?

I'd be tempted to send the bare minimum i.e. headings of sections. And then if asked for more, send without the reference list and any insightful writing taken out.

No, if you're going to give your work to anyone to proof read besides your supervisor, then give it to a post doc you feel you can trust, or someone much further ahead of you, not someone behind. Sounds dodgy to me!

Grad Students - How typical is it for your supervisor to re-write your work?

If its the early stages I wouldn't worry - you're work will change as you gain more confidence and you start to know the real arguments that run through your PhD. The things he's changing now may not even end up in your final thesis. If it continues into your writing up period then I'd start to question it.

One thing I wish I had done - my sup changes things because she thinks I realise why she is changing them. But she never says "I'm changing this because xyz" - I wish she did, instead it just gets changed, no explanation. It may be worth having a meeting and asking him to go through the changes and explain why, at least that way you can decide whether you think the changes are necessary and start to identify areas you can change your style (if necessary)

If you think you're writing is good, then its probably the same as my sup. In which case, just take the changes with a pinch of salt i.e. its not 'bad' writing, its just them being overly picky. My supervisor tells me all the time "the thing about you Sneaks is that you're writing is excellent/you're very good at writing/you can write, others can't" etc etc. but doesn't stop her changing it all!

I wouldn't overly worry. And if you are concerned handing your thesis in with their changes, then you might have to address it - my sup only changes publication work. Maybe ask them to confirm you can hand it in with their changes.

haha, I have posted before about this. My sup changes my publication work to the point where - if I make her 'track changes' it is entirely red - no black print left on the page.

But she only seems to do this for publications where she is a named author. And after several months of it, I've realised its just because she has an issue over people with different writing styles, so although I write academically and its fine, its not *her* style so she'll change things until it looks like she wrote it. Very annoying!

Possibly need help...

If thats the case then I'd definitely get someone to look through - it means you can then leave that as 'finished' rather than worrying about it and having to go back to it in 6 months when you've forgotten which variables are what etc. (up)

I can't believe it- am so embarrassed!
