SPSS Syntax anyone?
Avatar for sneaks

Is there any command that allows me to save output as variables in my data set?

I need to make an average of 5 participants scores, but then save it into the data set. at the mo I'm stuck copying and pasting from SPSS output > excel > SPSS

Which is rubbish!

My hubby could do it all on excel I suppose, but he's at work - stupid work :-s and I'd like to know if its possible for future reference anyway.

That is AWFUL batfink! I'd be wanting my rent back - but I know how difficult that all is :-(

I'm struggling today. My head feels foggy but I have to sort this data out.

Next Goal: add data to data set and recode

Job application form question
Avatar for sneaks

Firstly, include everything on your cv on your form - don't remove it, as chances are they won't look at both.

I'd be tempted to put conferences in the reserach record section. but don't just put a sentence about each - put a brief overview of any modules covered (I havea bullet point list) and then importantly a list of skills you've gained from these - if you need ideas PM me.

then in the cover letter/personal statement you can really go to town with fitting those skills to their requirements.

Gambling with job offers

Can't offer any advice. I've been in a very similar situation - I've got a part time, temporary RA job, but it *could* lead to a lectureship - nothing definite at all. And I've had to turn down a £32k local job - but it wouldn't have had any future. I'm sure hubby is not best pleased, but I had to gamble on the RA position - hopefully it will pay off, if not then there's always other things that will come up.

I'd say go with your gut feeling.

SPSS Advise?

Andy Field is the best source for SPSS help - he has a website with his lectures on www.statisticshell.com and definitely get his book.

However, there aren't many places that will tell you the very basics of how to enter data - if you have different types of questions.

I personally tend to treat most data as scale data. I put in any yes/no or true/false data as 0 and 1 so I can then use it in regression.

Any other data you can put in as numbers - but then use the 'values' column in 'variable view' to label the values - so you 'tell' SPSS that 1 = strongly disagree for example.

There are loads of vids on youtube though, which should help e.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icgooM1K2lU&feature=related

Another little endnote question (sorry!)
Avatar for sneaks

you can easily copy and paste the whole reference section and put it at the end/in the middle/at the beginning/where you want it :-)

that will go SO quickly though! Although having said that my brother is getting married in May and hasn't done anything yet!

Sup just emailed so it will be RA work today.

Goal 1: add question numbers to questions in data

The One Goal Thread
Avatar for sneaks

I haven't done enough work recently. I need to get some solid stuff done today. Although I haven't heard from sup for the entire weekend - if she emails/phones today I'll have to drop my pHD work and get on with the RA work. But for now

Goal 1: dog walk
Goal 2: Make a cup of tea
Goal 3: write up a paragraph about different kinds of assessment.

Another job rejection
Avatar for sneaks

Yeah I've been through the same - had 3 interviews over the last few months. I got good feedback from all of them but they've either had an internal candidate OR they've given it to someone who is 2-3 years post-PhD. So I can't really compete no matter how good/bad I am! Unfortunately my sup seems to think its me being under confident, but it most defintiely isn't - she's never seen me in that type of situation and I tend to be quite 'meek' around her, so she automatically assumes that's why. That makes me feel even worse because it feels like its *my* fault :-(

All I can think is that once I have the PhD I will be the smug one coming in competing against others who are still completing. Having the PhD will also make it more of a 'sure bet'. But I'm a long way off it at the mo :-(

PhD Group

Is this in the office you're working?

If so, working in a shared office is really tricky. In my office at the mo we;ve just had a new PhD student start and he will not be quiet - so its got the point where we can't start up conversations because it ends up in a 2 hour talk. And you can't do this every day if you want to get work done. I would imagine they're trying to 'set the tone' with you. If you are reading/writing you don't want people talking in the background constantly. We often 'go for a coffee' etc. if we want a real natter so we don't disturb everyone else in the room, so you could suggest this to one or two of your colleagues.

So I guess what I'm saying (with snow brain) is that they may have had a bad experience in the past and prefer to be quite strict with talking in your office, but may actually be very friendly and sociable. if that makes sense!?

9am till 5pm, sufficient?
Avatar for sneaks

I think it depends on your subject. I know some biology people spend all day measuring bugs in a dish (or something). In social sciences - at least for me, I just work when I need to. Sometimes I missed entire weeks, but most of the time I work over 9-5, especially now. I just plod away at work all day. After all there probably won'tbe anyone to 'tell you off' if you don't do work, its up to you to do it, so it depends on how long you need to work for you, if that makes sense!?

Am I being thick? (stats q)
Avatar for sneaks

Quote From dunni73:

Hi Sneaks, has your supervisor asked you to clarify the number or degrees of freedom? Usually in stats the 'effect size' can be a combination of the p value, the test (r) value and the sample number taken into account ie n or d.f. For example, if you have r=0.8 and p=0.001 but the sample was only 4, it wouldn't be an effective stats result but if the sample size was 200 and this was your stats output it would be very 'effective'.

Of course I may be completely talking rubbish.............:$

I think I need to do this, but I have different df in each cell, so exploring the use of 'harmonic mean' if anyone has any clue on that please let me know!
