not sure what to do
Avatar for sneaks

I applied for a job a while ago and just been offered an interview for it.

Its a non-academic job at a uni, but utilises all my skills. Its well paid and local, so is equivalent of me getting £6k more because I don't have to pay for commuting i.e. its £32k but if I got that in london I'd have to pay £6k to commute, so really only being on £26 (does that make sense!?)

It sounds right up my street.

BUT

Although I haven't told my sup I've applied (And I asked for them to not ask for references until after interview), she has expressed that she thinks I should be in academia and doing an academic job. She is also currently paying me for a part time RA role - so if I take a job it will look like I'm snubbing her generosity.

There's also a potential opportunity coming up in my department next year to take on part time (with an opportunity to go into full time) lecturing.

But I'm so confused, the job is great, in the short term at least, but will I be giving up a) my chance to get this lecture position (even though its pretty vague about if it is availbale and will still have to interview and b) the relationship with my supervisor (she can be pretty nasty if you cross her) before my thesis is complete

!?

I've started working with a hot water bottle under my feet and it is SO much better :-)

Still not really started work, but workign on a section now.

I guess my goal is to finish that at the end of the day - but looks doubtful!

errr no, in a word, progress is really slow. My sup says she reads stuff, but doesn't, or I'll send her something and she says "oh yes, I've raed through it" and never actually gives me any feedback.

I have a lot to do though and really need to just get stuff out at the mo.

wow you'd hate my nails then, they are constantly filthy because I stroke my cat/dog and the dirt just seems to go into my nails! I had them 'done' for my wedding and the manicurist (??) looked at me at disgust when I said i didn't oil them everyday. No one told me I had to oil them! (ssssh I still don't do it!)

Had about a foot taken off my hair - it was WAY too long, feels odd now, but I guess its ok.

Sup phoned back, told me that my ideas were ok but not expressed clearly enough grrrrrr.

So.....Goal 1: lunch haha!

had hair cut this morning - it was v long and thick so took about 2 hours. I've emailed sup, she called back but then somone called on her mob, so waiting for her to ring back, which is agony!

can't decide what my first goal will be until she's rang really (turkey)

I;d be tempted to re-number it (i.e. 20) so the reader knows where to look i.e. after fig 19, before fig 21. otherwise they;ll be flicking all the way back to figure 12.

BUT in the 'tables and figures' content page bit I'd put something like

Figure 12: picture of sneaks with hat
Figure 13: picture of sneaks with xmas coat
Figure 14: picture of sneaks with chocolate all over face
....
Figure 20: (replica of Figure 12) picture of Sneaks with hat

1) probably either as a consultant in my current field, or just doing vague office work locally, that I could have done without the BSc and MSc.

2) no, but sometimes I think it would be so much easier and I would have been saving and earning money for 4 years which would have been nice and I wouldn't feel so behind my friends who didn't do PhDs who are all doing up their houses in nice slate and stuff :-(

I'd make knights of the realm wear armour at all times. Stick that Sir Paul McCartney!

I like the idea of royalty, I just think this current lot are too dull. I want some really really bad behaviour or someone more down to earth - surely they are supposed to entertain us and be the gossip of the day, rather than jordan etc.

I would have taken the opportunity to work on journal articles as a good thing, many people finish their PhD without any publications and he was giving you the opportunity to build up your publication writing skills and get some on your cv. Why be so negative about this?

I don't for a second believe that universities are motivated by this RTS scheme - I assume this is just oz you are talking about, surely it depends on how you are funded? And why then have we seen many people fail their vivas on this very website? It comes across like you are suggesting that we should all jack it in, and they'll let us pass anyway, this is not the case! I've seen three people this year fail their vivas at my university - one who did exactly what you have done, gone over their sups head to submit and then was told it was nowhere near PhD standard by the examiners.

I can believe you are not celebrating your PhD, but neither would I if I knew I'd plagarised in it.

endnote, refworks, mendeley or other?

First goal - find radio station I can tolerate, open SPSS

Second goal - run descriptives on data.

Thanks Algae, do you know if it has output styles for journals? In endnote I can select it to come out as e.g. APA, Harvard style OR 'journal of xyz' style - does it do that? Not overly worried if it doesn't but would make my life easier.

I thought refworks looks awful - very difficult to work out where everything was on it and how to customise. Have no idea why our uni went with that rather than endnote, because it wasn't worth whatever saving they made!
