Hello All,
May I ask how many jobs did you apply for before getting an interview/job?
I have applied for ten jobs so far, how many was yours? and how long you have been waiting?
I would like to know to keep me going :(
:$
OK, I have send an email and now I think I should not have send it, here is why. Please tell me what do you think.
I have been applying for jobs for 6 months now. I have been to workshops about CVs, cover letters etc. I have asked my supervisor to check my CV and cover letter before applying few months ago, but I didn't get any job with my previous applications.
Now there is a new postdoc advertised and I don't want to loose it, cause i really like the job.
There is a very respected investigator (i will call him "old supervisor") in my field who was my supervisor's supervisor about 15 years ago, therefore I know him and he helped so much before, basically he is very nice and kind person.
When I had my viva he congratulated me so much and asked about my future plans, so I told him I want to stay here (am international student) and do a postdoc, so he told me if you need any help please don't hesitate to ask me for help, you might need it along the way.
OK till now sounds good, but I didn't ask him yet for any advice, I thought it is not nice to ask him and I should ask my supervisor if I need any help and my supervisor should be able to help me, so I did ask for my supervisor advice on my application and as I mentioned I didn't get the jobs.
what I did is I send an email to the "old supervisor" and told hem I would like advice from him for the next job application, and that I want to find out if I'm doing any mistakes.
Now I think this might hurt my own supervisor ( he is very nice to me and I don't want him to think that I'm not respecting him), they are close and am sure the old supervisor will tell my supervisor that I asked for help.
Do you think what I did is wrong or rude, do you think I should tell my supervisor that I have asked help from the old supervisor? just for information my supervisor is aware that the old supervisor offered help previously ( they are both so nice and I don't want to make any problems or mistakes) please advice , I would really appreciate it , am really feeling so bad about it but, at the same time I think the old supervisor might be able to help more, as he is more experienced. :-(
The reason am so confused on what to do is that am a foreigner and the difference between our culture is so huge, so I can't make clear judgement on what is right or wrong.
Send an anonymous email to the lecturer and don't discuss it, you will bring problem to yourself by intruding. May be am not understanding the situation quite right, but if the lecturer is good, then students shouldn't complain in the first place? if they are complaining just to please the other lecturer, is there any way you inform the department about these plans? and then leave it to them to investigate. Good luck.
Sorry to hear that willi, but every one makes mistakes, and in a year or so you won't even remember it happened (this might seem impossible now, but you will). I have done so many mistakes, and I'm sure your supervisor will understand if you tell him (he was a student like you few years ago and surely he made mistakes). May be you were stressed and forgot to do that, one mistake doesn't make you idiot or stupid in front of his eyes (OK may be a little but not so much i think :)).
Can you send an email to everyone who contributed and tell them the truth? is it possible to ask them to come together sooner? (Some might think that is stupid, some might feel sorry for you and help you but, who cares ! as long as you can get your job done, let your pride aside and ask for help). May be you should ask for advice from your supervisor about that? If not, a month really is not that much in a long PhD, I had to wait three months for a protein arrival from America and another 4 months for other stuff like that, and I was loosing my mind, now I think I should have enjoyed the free time and just write/organise/or read more papers.
Disasters like that are common in PhD, although it feels so bad at the time but, you can rise above it and take it as a lesson and another challenge to overcome. Best of luck

Hello All,
Here I am again, thinking of what I have done wrong and frustrated as usual.
I would like some ideas please, I found it very strange that I am not getting any responses from prespective supervisors.
Well, I have applied for a job and I was total fit for that job, I have done every thing needed to do that Job, I have a publication in respected journal in that area, I really like that subject as well and want to investigate it, but I don't understand why I was not even called for an interview? am so upset and disappointed.
another thing, there was a job advert and I was interested in, but the job description was a bit vague, so I asked the principal investigator about the project, but I didn't get any replies as well! it is so rude and I have done part of the research so I know what is about
Ok this is going on for a while no one reply to me, and am thinking may be am doing something wrong.
Do you think a cover letter really affect that much to be called for an interview? I mean I do my best but since am not English am wondering may be they don't like the way I write? or is there any other reasons you might think of?
I would appreciate any suggestions.
I have read every guide on how to write a perfect cover letter..etc and I asked my supervisor to look at my letter, he told me the letter should reflect my personality so, he can not help that much, he didn't suggest any major changes to the letter, except few language related changes, so am thinking it is not that bad
I just can't get it why no one replies to me, even for rejection, at least I will know what is wrong with my application :(
Thanks so much
Hello Satchi,
Thanks for replying :$, I thought no one will really reply.
I'm not from UK, that is why am a bit unsure if it would be rude to send the thesis to the supervisor through the university, after submitting the thesis at the registry office, the university regularly take two copies of the thesis (one for library and one for the supervisor), but they asked me if i want to take the thesis myself to the supervisor or if I want to let the university to do that, that is why am asking :$
thanks again for replying that is very nice of you 8-)

Hello All,
I have at last my hard bound copy of my thesis, and I will submit it to the registry tomorrow.
I feel that I have achieved something :-)
I was wondering how did you submit your thesis to the supervisor? I mean did you use the uni postal service? or submitted the thesis personally to the supervisor? I'm still in the same city by the way.
