I am hoping to submit in July. My funding runs until September so we'll see!

Work on the introduction for my paper is going slowly. So far I have managed to edit half a section which I wrote a while ago. However inbetween writing I have got my JeS account upgraded, been in touch with the research office and arranged a date to meet with the guy I am hoping will be my mentor for a postdoc. I think I am going to leave my introduction for now and to have a look at the JeS system to get an idea of what is required for a grant application.

very organised Natassia!

Apparently I need to wait for my Je-s account to be upgraded before I can see the form for grant applications so I will leave that for now. My next goal is to work on the introduction section of my journal paper.

When are you planning to submit Dunni? Good luck with the editing!

My presentation went really well, thanks! I was quite nervous but everyone was really positive about it. Now I just need to write it up as a journal paper! This was going to be my next big project over January but the grant applications might get in the way of that a bit.

I have done my first goal and have just managed to log into the Je-s system. My next goal is to get more of an idea about what the grant application will involve and to start to think it through and make notes.

Is anyone working today? I had been planning a couple of relaxed days after presenting at a conference yesterday, but when I got home last night had am email informing me that after 1st of Feb the ESRC are terminating both sources of funding I'm planning to apply for next year after 1st of Feb. So rather than having time to relax and ages and ages to sort out the applications, I now have mountains of work to do to submit them by that deadline.

My first goal is to make a couple of small amendments to my chapter, phone the ESRC and then to email my supervisors.

Passed my Viva yesterday :)

Well done! What a lovely Christmas present!

My first goal is done. I need a few more rehearsals before Monday though. I probably over-rehearse but I freak out and forget everything otherwise!

My next goal is to start looking into writing a proposal for ESRC Postdoc funding. I had an email back from a potential mentor yesterday. Very exciting!

Possibly need help...

How far into your PhD are you?

This sounds a bit like my experience towards the beginning. I used to write analyses every fortnight for my supervisor and we'd go through the stuff verbally (with me recording each session) but no written feedback. He generally wouldn't read stuff beforehand, but we'd go through the analysis together and he'd comment during the meetings on what I had written. I was always told that I was doing really well but wondered how he actually knew that...

He is now on sabbatical and my second supervisor has given me comments on the overall structure of the draft of my first chapter (my first actual written feedback from a supervisor came 2 years in for me), but says that there are details which we will need to address later.
I was speaking to another student in a completely different department about this and she said her experience was the same and that she used to get general feedback with more detailed feedback coming later.

I think if you are at an earlyish stage some supervisors might not give you really detailed feedback because you're going to have to come back to it at a later date anyway as you may not be in a position to address all of their comments fully and produce something which is thesis ready. If you are being told that everything is correct don't worry and get on with it. As long as you are on the right track (and you have to trust your supervisors here!) writing isn't a waste at all and the only way to learn to do it to a high standard is to practice.

However having said that I found it VERY difficult before I'd had any sort of written feedback. The only thing you can do really is to talk to your supervisors about your concerns.

Batfink you have just reminded me that I need to get a railcard renewal form stamped also! The very first thing I am going to do now is to hunt around to see if I have a passport photo to use.

Then I am going to write down some prompts for my presentation on Monday and have a couple of rehearsals.

I find that slowly but surely is the way to go Dunni. I have been working on this chapter now for a couple of months and finally got everything together today. So, apart from an argument I have been having with Refworks when trying to create a bibliography, it is now finished. (up) I'm going to celebrate by knocking off early to go to the gym and then come home to a nice big glass of wine.

Conclusion done. My next goal is to go through and tweak my analysis.

I am now happy with my presentation and slides and just need another few run throughs. My next goal is to finish writing the conclusion section of a chapter.

It's good that you're finally getting your heating sorted at last!
I was supposed to go to the gym at 7 this morning but slept in until 8.30. Whoops.

My first goal today is to rehearse my presentation for Monday and to make a few changes to the Powerpoint slides.

Wow it is quiet on this thread today.

I now have a near final version of my conclusion. There's a bit which needs working on but I'm going round in circles with it so will come back to it tomorrow. My next goal is to pull everything together into one document, insert data extracts, etc.

The final draft of my analysis section is now written. My next goal is to produce a near final draft of the conclusion.
