There was a really amazing bbc documentary about a year ago about the yucatan and divers who are trying to map the network of underground caves there. It was one of the few things I've seen recently that really stirred my imagination, but, yes, extreme. Can't remember the name of the pits they were diving in ("xxxxxx pit"), but one of the things that stands out was an especially deep, empty, lifeless one where the divers eventually reached an acidic layer of rotting plant life, and also the way the water is in layers - clear above cloudy or something? That was a bit of personal nostalgia (about a documentary!!!?)

PhDs are bad for you

yeah, all the manual labour. I've wrecked my back a few times lugging things around the lab. Cuts, scratches etc. Worsening eyesight too.

Oh, I see. "I'm in love with Orlando Bloom". Well, until that post I'd thought DJWickid was male.

Oh. I don't know - I always imagined DJWickid was a he? Why did you think that? Maybe I associated 'DJ' with 'male' - a sexist assumption?

Jen - don't feel bad! The dogs you met yesterday might not have been put down if they were healthier, right? (I know completely healthy animals are put down, but maybe they'd have had a better chance of finding a new home if they weren't ill? Or was the dermatitis actually so bad that they couldn't be helped? I don't know...) SO by researching this you'll probably make a contribution to saving dogs' lives (I guess you know all that, but keep reminding yourself of it). And I don't actually think DJWickid was acusing you of exploitation - to me it sounded like he was saying 'this is the simple answer that helps no-one [have nothing to do with it]' and was acknowledging how complicated real life is? Maybe I'm wrong. Whatever it meant, don't let it upset you any more :(

average number of articles read

I always thought it would be good to read one every morning first thing - I never got round to doing it though. My reading sort of happens in spurts - a few months ago a had a pile of about 30 or 40 papers that I was constantly dipping into. Last month I probably read a total of 2. It depends on what's happening in the lab.
