Word 2007 - Header Help!
S

Yes, you need to put in a continuous section break, then with the header in the following page, click on the icon in the header toolbar which says 'same as previous'. Clicking on this enables the header to be different from the previous one. Then just type in the new header, and only that one should be affected.

Sue you mean 'vowels' don't you as in dznt, bcs, abt and so on? :-)

Quite right Bug, I do indeed mean vowels!

dissertation chair?

Seems people are slow in replying to your post! I'll start then. I think you should go with option B - altho I'd be wary about having a supervisor who hasn't supervised a PhD before, I think that's preferable to working with someone who's shown no interest in you or your work. Come to think of it, both these options are pretty grim - is there no-else with a bit more experience who could supervise you? You need someone who knows how to get students through a PhD, who has contacts and a good reputation etc etc, and who is also interested in your work - neither of these people seems to fit the bill. I'd approach some experts in your field and try and find someone else.

...and btw, you'll have to use consonants in your thesis, you know! ;-)

confused about peer review feedback
S

Yes, go with the reviewer's comments which make the most sense to you and fit with your article. You will need to write a covering letter, so explain in that why you have not made the changes the first reviewer asked for - justify yourself striongly. Incorporate some of their points if possible, to mollify them somewhat. You should be fine as long as you can show why you've done what you've done.

The nocturnal workers' thread
S

OK fellow PhDers in the southern hemisphere, who's working tonight? It's only 9pm and I'm already too tired, but am determined to finish rewriting another draft of a chapter before I'm done tonite. Written a terribly long, woolly chapter, but hey, have to start somewhere. And today I had my first single author paper accepted by a journal - hooray for me! The good parts of doing a PhD!!

Authorship Issue
S

Hi Starlight

I think it's unethical for your supervisors to want to be included as co-authors. They need to have had substantial content input to be included as an author, which it doesn't sound like they have contributed. Is there any way that you can ask them to make any changes they want done?

I'm not sure what you can do about this issue tho - if you take their names off, as Sylvester has said, this could seriously jeopardise your career. Maybe you can take solace in knowing that it is all your work, other articles will hopefully be single author, and that this is a kind of thank you/payment to your supervisors for getting you through.

Accountability Partners - Write your Dissertation in 15 Minutes a Day
S

Hi Lara, Seamonkey and Ruby

Don't panic Lara!! You'll get through it! Little chunks, and you'll be alright. And others are right - you know more than you think you do. Just remember that you've gotten through other exams (yes, not like a viva, but still exams) and you can do this one too. It's just on a bigger scale! Remember to breathe, be calm, and work your way through your lists.

Well after an unproductive day yesterday, took the evening off and went out. Did me a power of good. Am now sane again and am going to edit a chapter today, get it closer to being finished, and then that'll be 4 chapters done!

Accountability Partners - Write your Dissertation in 15 Minutes a Day

Hi Seamonkey

No great tips on ending procrastinating from me at the moment unfortunately - I've had one of those days where I've sat and stared at the screen for most of the afternoon, added a sentence or two, and basically done very little! It comes in waves - if your first couple of weeks were good, then I'm not surprised this week isn't so good - hopefully tomorrow, and next week will be better!

I had a great productive day yesterday, but the muse has left today. Anyway, in theory, to get over procrastination you need to break your work down into little chunks, make yourself do it for a little while, reward yourself etc. I know all this, but it isn't working for me at the moment! Have taken the dog for a walk, had a coffee, and now am just going to force myself to work.

You're not alone procrastinating! Onwards to work tho!

when do you let it go?

Quote From sylvester:

I've got past the stage of trying to impress by supervisors now, I just send them stuff and get a feel for whether it's good enough or not.

I completely agree! I just send stuff on when I'm more or less happy with it and know it's not perfect, but has the essence of what I need to say. I know they'll write all over it anyway and work will be redrafted and redrafted. They don't think I'm too sloppy doing things this way.

And can relate to your summer. It's just gone spring where I am, and have had to turn down an invitation to a barbecue in the lovely spring sunshine this week-end :-( It's going to be a long spring/summer for me!! Am already feeling like a martyr to this thesis!!!

Considering quitting...
S

That's excellent - glad it's worked out so far. Good luck job hunting!

Tips on how to finish PhD on time
S

I'm 7 months away from finishing, and would definitely be finishing within the 3 years if it hadn't been for taking on extra work. Be careful with the amount of academic, but non-thesis work you take on - while it's important to write journal articles and give conference papers throughout your candidature, these can take you away from your thesis. And doing TA work just sucks up the time. I taught 2 subjects for one semester, and this was essentially a full time job. I lost 14 weeks of thesis writing. And yep, write as you go and write every day.

Lecturing posts - like gold dust?
S

If you want to keep lecturing, snaffle up that permanent job I say. Yes, lectureships are like gold dust, at least in my part of the world. Your PhD will always be there - if you get the opportunity to get a permanent academic job, grab it!

Stupid question - Methodology
S

Quote From walminskipeasucker:

It's just 30-40 interviews sounds an awful lot. Do you think you could interview such a number of managers within you time frame.

I don't know about the other frameworks you guys have mentioned, but I do know a little bit about interviewing. If you're doing a PhD, I don't think 30-40 interviews is too many at all - I think you need at least that many to generate enough data. You could always think about getting some funding from your uni to get them transcribed, although I've found the transcroption process helpful as it helps me know the material really well, think, and make links between the interviews.

Conference paper expectations?!
S

Yes, I think so, but it will also be for the journal if chosen to go in.

Stupid question - Methodology
S

Your methodology then, is interviews! You can be more specific eg, indepth, semi-structured interviews. And don't say 'only' doing interviews - interviews are an important qual tool! Get yourself a decent book on research, like Denscombe's 'The Good Research Guide' - it will provide you with info to make your interview methodology sound lovely and robust!
