online communities/networking..am i the only person in the world to not have joined one?
S

Yep, here here. You are in full control of what is on there, besides which I make sure that I'm not compromised in any photos.

Also, I do not appear under my full name on Fbook anyway, so searching me out (especially if I have full priovacy and remove my picture) would be nigh on impossible. You worry too much. Big brother isn't here just yet!

Surely time for an inventory of smilies. What can we remember?

Yes, I'm a Facebook fan too. It's particualrly good for keeping abreast of what your friends are up and often makes for a decent conversation when you bump into them in the street.

This "future employers" Daily Mail-esque scare story is nonsense. If you're really that bothered (and you might well wish to consider whether you'd like to work for an employer that probes your private life - I suspect very few will), you can switch on the security settings so only your friends can see your profile, or temporarily suspend your account.

Big fat hairy spiders

Yes, we were seeing them in August. Also, rather like the slugs, they're enormous this year.

When/how is a stipend paid?
S

Quarterly, upfront. Next one at end of september, yay!

what to do.. vindictive collegue
S

Very simple really, talk to her and if that doesn't work, then your sup.

Adverts for PhD's
S

The majority are October starts. Some do start at other times of year (Jan is a frequent start date) and are often based around the needs of a project that comes into the university and/or money becoming available. However, these are in the minority. Have a look around on this site.

how much did you know when you started?
S

I would take it easy up until a week before you commence, then begin to re-familairise yourslef with what you said you'd do. They're not expecting you to go into your first meeting with the answer to the question, so just make sure you are appear motivated and meaning business. For now, relax and enjoy what's left of the summer. Your brain will thank you for the break and there won't be much time for holidays later. I'm a year in and loving it!

don't ever leave it to the last minute like me.

Don't worry, it didn't come across as negative. Most informative in fact. As you say, staying focussed will be the key here. It probably depends on each person's supervisor, but someone in my dept suggested to me that I make it clear early on, that in no uncertain terms I want this PhD done in 3 years and that I'd like their assistance in ensuring that it happens.

Any tips for (job interview) nerves?
S

Think of as being a bit like a presentation but without slides (i.e. clue up on all you need to know and how you would answer particular questions). You could practice with a piece of paper, making sure you have a list of bullets of things you want to say or ask. Then just commit them to memory ahead of the interview.
