I remember this - summer of 1983. They even dragged Malcolm McClaren on TV-AM to explain the song!

Self doubt and unworthy of PhD

This has come up a number of times before. We all go through the "I'm not worthy/I'm a fake/they must have made a mistake" phase. It happened to me in November but I'm fine now. I think it's because I got my head down and got to grips with the literature so that I can talk fairly authoritatively on my field. It gives you alot of confidence - especially when you know more than your sups on your topic. It's probably also because I set out a number of milestones which I have been working through one by one. So I do feel I'm getting somewhere.

I'd say your first port of call is to draft a Lit review. ALright it will change later, but it will boost your confidence.

Having fulfilled a meaningless role in management consultancy for a number of years producing reports no one will ever read, that I have no pride in and no sense of achievement, I gave it all up because I wanted to achieve something in life.

A PhD was something I thought I'd never get a chance at, but I worked my socks off and earned my studentship. Doing what I do in academia, I very much get a sense that I'm self-actualising and trying to reach my potential. I certainly wouldn't go back to what I was doing, no regrets whatsoever.

Mu heartful condolences to all the those involved in the events in the US.

I can see where you're coing from here, but at some point you will have to defend your thesis anyway, so you need to argue now why your research is good as it stands. Likewise, I would say that the onus is on your supervisor to argue how her research would improve your thesis. The point is, fight your own corner!
