One of the big pluses of doing a PhD (assuming you have a supervisor who lives in the real world) is that you can choose your working hours. Like you, I am a night owl so tend to wander in at lunchtime and then work deep into the evening. I hear what you're saying on teaching - I have to teach at 9am on a couple days of the week, but this is manageable if I take power naps during the day.

It's just a case of getting to know what works best for you and using that strategy to get you through.

I felt it appropriate that I undertook a little research into the history of our masters, the PGF team. My research found the following clip taken from the Roxy nightclub in Sheffied in 1989. Knowing that the team was hip and trendy in the 1980s it was inevitable that they were there that evening. I've studied the clip and the guy at 54 seconds with the permed mullet looks like someone who might like sausage sarnies and (van)s. Mind you, the guys at the back of the stage in the navy uniforms have a lot to answer for.

However, I'm not sure so I need your help in identifying them in the clip. Please post your suggestions!

Why are virtually all the posts at the top of this board so morbid today? Cheer up everyone!

I do think that the early years post-PhD are rather rough - scrambling around PostDocs and short term contracts. Obviously the temptations of industry will take a fair number out of academia. Nonetheless, there are many who will fight it out. My intention (unless stuff happens) is to get in there. So publish, publish, publish and network, network, network!

Seeing as though it's fashionable to be morbid today, when I'm off guard I still think I'm 22. Then I come to my senses and realise I'm 33 and wonder where the last 11 years went. Enjoy it while it lasts and don't forget to stop to smell the flowers on the way.
