I will be doing lit review, method for phase I, results for phase I, method for phase 2, results for phase II, discussion (where phase II is informed by phase I).

I use a whole range of methodologies to answer three seperate questions (which are forming one chapter each) - I was going to write each one as a seperate paper, with intro, methodology etc. But I was advised not to split up the methods, but to put them all in a chapter beforehand. Then the examiner has a clear idea of what is being done in a larger context, and where the thesis is heading. A thesis is all about signposting, and not introducing surprises and new material etc at different points.

Just to clarify though, that this is a forum for postgraduate studies (Masters, PhD etc), so whilst we'd be happy to answer undergraduate questions (we've all been through it!) there might be an undergradaute forum elsewhere on the internet too.

How does your department treat you?
T

We're treated like staff - in terms of teaching responsibility, how they interact with us, we share the same common room and attend the same seminars etc. We have to pay for printing (25p for colour, and I have A LOT of maps and model images etc) but the allowance is pretty generous. PhD students have study rooms of maybe 5-10 people, each with their own computer I think. But I'm in a research group so I share an office with one other.

I think it is different for Masters students a bit though.

Why are you doing a PhD?
T

Because I used to work in a shop, and when I would take some details I would write Mr and they would say 'It is Doctor, actually' in a condescending manner. That moment inspired me.

OK, seriously I did it because it just felt right; the idea of an academic post appealed to me, especially the teaching (which has been the most fulfilling part of my PhD) and the relative freedom.

How to deal with your program code

I agree with the flow diagram idea - maybe put some examples of code in too. But I can't imagine they would check it line by line, or try to run it themselves.

When to tell your eager supervisor to STOP?
T

Will he supply extra funding to do these experiments? Because presumably doing them would extend the time you spent on your PhD, and maybe past your funding.

How to write about your collaboration work in your thesis
T

I tihnk you do need to make it very clear, perhaps in your methodology chapter exactly what you contributed. But just describing that would make no sense without the rest of the context (i.e. other people's work). I'm going through this at the moment, and the best way I found to show it was to do a big flow diagram at the start of the methodology chapter, and highlight the things I did. hen it shows where your work fits in.

Yes. Definately. Go for it - we're behind you all the way!

Last on to post on this thread wins

Huh? That doesn't count as a winning entry!
