Doing a PhD, does it make you ugly?

I always thought scruffy, wasted-looking staff had an interesting air of worldliness and life experience about them, when I was a fresh faced nineteen year old.

Phew!

two questions- viva/examiners + PhD supervisor contact

Oops, question 2)...

Anything from once a week, to 2 months, depending on what I'm doing and if I'm just ploughing through numbers, or producing reports. In my first year it was probably every 3 weeks for the firt term or so, but we do a lot of our stuff over email, and their office is only next door. Hope that helps.

I'm also asked to suggest some names, but you're right that we don't get the final say i imagine. But you might know best of all who in your field would be best to look over it, so it seems quite sensible to ask your opinion.

I have left phd and a tiny bit of me regrets it
T

Of course its right to feel some regrets, you'd already put in a lot of effort before you left I'm sure, and it is seen as a big thing. And we naturally compare ourselves to others, like your friend who is just starting. But you'd obviously thought about it hard, and came to a pretty pragmatic and sensible decision. So enjoy the pleasures of real money, being able to afford a mortgage before the age of 35, not having to write a paper at 3 in the morning, oh and not having to explain to parents/friends/old woman at the bus stop why your small insignificant corner of research is actually important to anybody!

Just started this week, and already got two stars? You must be very helpful indeed ;-)

Hmmph, don't ask me - personally I can't stand my posts. But hey, think yourself lucky - I'm stuck with them!

I must agree with Mr Engineer that being a bit more specific would help us to offer advice. Surely (don't call me Shirley) thats what we're all on this forum for - to receive and offer help and advice - not just ranting? We're here to help Pucca.

Using only parts of a published paper in PhD thesis
T

I think you'd just put it in your thesis, and on the front page (where you have to sign its all your own work etc) don't you put 'Parts of this thesis was published in the following publications:.....' or something?

I don't think you're supposed to cite yourself in the text. Though that might just be the sciences. Or I might be talking nonsense. Hope its helps though!
