Actually, what would be useful...

Would be a column on the forum page, that as well as giving the time of the last post, also gave the name of the last poster? Add it to the list I suppose...

24/7 Openings--its a good thing

The big supermarkets that are open 24/7 still have to close early on a Sunday due to trading laws I think - so most supermarkets are open 11-4 or something. They probably do Sunday hours on a bank holiday Monday.

I worked in a supermarket for a few months a long long time ago, and I think on a bank holiday they paid us triple time? I remember earning something like £15 an hour at the age of 16...(up)

Is that helpful enough for a star? ;-)

Length of Methodology Chapter
T

My Methodology is 19 pages/7000 words ish, but I'm in the sciences. My chapter is purely methodology, with some theory. But bigger questions I'm leaving to the relevant discussion chapter.

10 000 words per chapter average sounds very high to me, I have 10 chapters and a limit of 80 000 words, I suppose it depends on subject and University...

Tell me something helpful...

A few nuggets of helpful information passed down from Coastman Snr to Coastman Jnr:

1. You should never try to rake leaves facing into the wind.

2. Never test the depth of the water with both feet.

3. You have two ears and one mouth. Use them in proportion.

4. If your dog is fat, you aren't getting much exercise.

Quote From cakeman:

Hi Guys

On drugs, or not on drugs, what an athlete!

I don't know exactly what, but something made me go 'wow' at this comment. If someone was on (illegal) drugs, then I would never class them as an athlete. I suppose I'm quite conservative on the drugs issue, because to me it takes some of the romance and just general awe-inspiringness away from what can be a thrilling example of human achievement.

Searching for a University that offers online PhD in Environmental Science/Management.
T

If you're looking in particular for Marine Science then I'd recommend (in no particular order) Hull (Institute for Estuarine and Coastal Studies), Southampton (and the National Oceanography Centre), Cambridge, Bangor, University College London. The University of Newcastle also does a Tropical Marine Management MSc I think, so presumably they do PhDs in that area too.

Being homesick
T

Yep I think those last three points you made really do contribute to you getting over the whole homesickness business.

It would be great if this forum could...

The PGF Team have just given us all this (and they are still promising the private messaging), so we don't want to be greedy! ;-)

Revising the Literature Review
T

Yep, its a circular process, and the need for a literature review changes with time ; whilst your literature review in the 1st year is there to give you a good grounding in the area and to hel you identify key areas and ideas, by the 3rd year it is there to create an argument for your thesis, which you then answer through the data. But the data analysis and literature review should inform each other during writing up.

It is annoying, I gave myself a short deadline to hand in my review chapter, thinking that I had most of it done from my 1st year report. how wrong I was...
