Confidence Issues, help with increasing!

I need to sort myself out on one of these - shouldn't be turning down free conferences and free excuses to put off even more work!

Should I be quitting?

Is your PhD 4 years? That would explain it I guess. If it was 3 years and your transfer report was after 2, that doesn't give you long to finish data collection/analysis and write up!

Hey pal, I'm sorry to hear that. PhDs take a lot of energy and motivation which I find often comes at the expense of other areas of my life.

I'm not very good at suggesting this sort of thing, but maybe some people on here have suggestions on how to get some sparks and energy back into your relationship? That's if you want to get those things back into it of course.

still monday?? looking for reasons...

Facebook - findaphd group?

Well everyone would have the choice to join it or not. Sounds similar to a little myspace posse that got together a while ago.

Sorry to hear about your situation - the biggest way to get and stay motivated about a PhD is to have a lot of support around you, and it sounds like you don't.

My advice would be to knuckle down and get stuck into the work; when you're churning out good results then you've definately got something to take to your supervisor and get noticed! You should defintely talk to him/her about too about this lack of support.

One thing Clairet, everyone I know has to do a transfer report at 12 months, not 24. Here it's treated as a transfer from a theoretical MPhil to a PhD (so if what you've done in a year isn't up to a PhD you can still get a Masters qualification). Not sure about having a transfer report that late after 2 years, but I guess different Universities vary.

Dory I hope you can turn a into a !

We have a few fees-only EU students funded by NERC in our department, but yes you're right it's not ideal.

I wonder if organisations such as the International Maritime Organisation would contribute to some funding? They're responsible for marine pollution monitoring.

Nice American looking for money

Depending on where you want to study, a Gates scholarship might be an idea. They seem to cover fees and give you a big wedge of cash to drink away too!

How to gage adding to 'current knowledge'
T

'Adding to Current Knowledge' can mean anything from discovering a new subatomic particle or a cure for cancer, to reinterpting someone elses dataset using a different analysis method; both are just as valid.

As for publishing; there are probably a large percentage of students that don't publish a paper at all. I think it's good to publish, especially if you want an academic career, but don't get too hung up on it and consider yourself a failure if you don't.

Indeed, Matthew is right when he says it's only training, and just one step on a very long career ladder...

For environmental stuff yep NERC is a good bet, but very competitive. I would also try the British Council and the Royal Geographical Society. Helps to know what your project is going to be about though because there could be some organisations specific to that field.

Quick question about studying
T

Yes, in the people I know it doesn't exactly inspire a good work ethic because they spend most of their time moaning about it!
