Though in the name of research, I've found out that a 60000 word PhD at a 1st class standard with delivery in 60 days will only set you back £15840. That's a year and a bit of my studentship - bargain!

I have to submit a similar first year report to transfer to a PhD (it's a bit disheartening that all year my status has been 'not at first registered). I have to hand it in sometime between now and September, and I'm hitting 16 000 words at the moment...

It was a while ago for me, but I remember the whole thing running pretty smoothly, and I think I got my funding confirmation in July/August

Probably the best thing to do is phone the relevant funding person at NERC (it's a different person depending on if your University is A-Leeds or Leicester-Z) www.nerc.ac.uk/funding/contacts.shtml

Your supervisor would also be a good person to keep informed; mine was very good in sorting most of this out for me.

I have four supervisors (2 at University, 2 industrial). I don't see my industrial supervisors that much, but my 2 University supervisors are male and female. I get on with both of them equally well, though to a certain extent I guess I'm quite lucky!

Their personalities and experience as a supervisor probably outweigh any potential bias due to sex etc
