Showing a bit of enthusiasm before you get there also gives your supervisor a good impression of you?

I got offered a few different projects at my last University, but my undergrad supervisor specifically talked me against staying because of the reasons already mentioned (or because he was trying to get rid of me!). I think it's a good thing to move.

I remember the summer before I started my PhD being the longest summer I'd ever had. I'd been working for a year and was counting down the days to leave my dull job! And it gave me way too much time to think of all the bad things that could go wrong, instead of the positive experiences I would get out of it

An old supervisor of mine told me a story when he was going to a conference in the US, and halfway through the flight a stewardess came up to his seat and asked if he could take a look at an elderly lady who was experiencing chest pain. Unfortunately, doctors of grassland ecology are not much use.
