I use my Kindle a lot for reading articles - it has saved me a lot of printing costs. You send the pdfs to your email to download them and if you write "convert" in the subject line then they are much easier to read (like a book). It doesn't work with all pdfs but with most I haven't had any problems. I highlight sections on the Kindle and write brief notes - it is not easy to write notes longer than a few words though. How do you use it with Google books though?

I agree with what the others have said. I have lived and worked in Italy for almost 15 years and I speak and write Italian every day. I also write academic articles in Italian - and I ALWAYS get them checked before submission!

Hi - I am full time but never really manage to do full time hours as family and kids tend to get in the way! I am also overseas so I can sympathise - I really miss not being on campus and it can get a bit lonely!

Sorry Sneaks I disagree! If the quote ends with a full stop then it should go inside the quotation marks. If it doesn't, then outside IMO.... and two full stops is just plain wrong! :p

OK, this is mainly off topic as I rarely use it for work but wondered if anyone else uses Instapaper with their Kindle? I save articles online to Instapaper and then try and send them to my kindle - sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't. Not sure why. Has anyone else had more success?

I am currently applying to present at a conference in Germany next year and my department has offered me (subject to acceptance) £50 to get there and stay there. :-( I am not sure I will be able to attend even if accepted. I have been looking for other options but a lot of the bursaries available have very restrictive conditions - and I am not young enough, British enough, or Marxist enough to apply neither am I a lay preacher or a talented musician or engineer. Any ideas on how to get more funding?

Yes, I do this. I live in a different country and travel back once or twice a year.

My husband. :-) He did his PhD in Italy (he's Italian) and then a few years later won a scholarship to do a PhD at Oxford. So he did. Same discipline but different areas of studies and different theses!

I don't have a study or a desk (sob!) so most pdfs go on my Kindle. I have bought about half a dozen books but the rest have been borrowed so now live back in the library.
