They definitely sound more American than British - apart from the wordy one that sounds more Chinese!

(Not) being accepted for a conference - Easy Chair?
T

Hello all. I applied to present a poster at a conference and the application was done online via the "easychair" system. Does anybody else know anything about this? My proposal was turned down and I received the following automatic responses from my two reviewers:
No. 1 Overall rating = 2 (accept) - no additional comments
No. 2 Overall rating = 0 (borderline) - comments stating that my abstract was not detailed enough so possibly not relevant

I just wondered what the scoring system is exactly as I can't find any info on it and I wanted to know how close I was to being accepted. Also it seemed a bit strange to be turned down "automatically" - is this normal?
Thanks.

My viva was today, and ..... I did it :)

Fantastic! Congratulations Dr K!

Journal writing---does it work for you?
T

I do it for a while - and then forget about it for several weeks! When I actually do it I find it really helps to get my thoughts organized. Off to write journal....

Juggling PhD with motherhood... any advice?

Hi - if you have the choice I would choose a childminder for now as like Smilodon said, babies don't really "do" interaction at that age - at least not with other babies. We had a childminder for my son until he was 2 and then he went to nursery part-time. It seemed to work out well - good luck!

MA Results disappointment

Just realised how glum and depressing my previous post sounded so wanted to add that I also got married and had a baby during my MA - and I got good marks for THOSE modules! ;-)

MA Results disappointment
T

Hi - I didn't get a distinction either on my MA! On the course details sent to me, it stated that the final result was based solely on the dissertation - I got a distinction in the dissertation but those details were out of date - it was also based on the results of the modules which brought down my average :-s I had a pretty tough time during 2 modules - in one I had a serious accident which resulted in me becoming partially disabled and in another my flat mate died. For both these modules I just passed but I didn't ask the uni to take it into consideration because I thought it wouldn't make a difference to the final mark :-s In the end, it seemed to be more hassle to contest it - and I had already been through the same dilemma because I missed out on getting a first at degree level by 1% ! Don't know why I'm telling you this really! But I agree with the other poster - if you already have funding then it won't make any difference further on down the line no matter how disappointing it is now.

Applying for a PsyD: what does "A/AS Level" mean?
T

A-levels are the equivalent to the maturità, I believe - all though don't take my word for it as my son is only in materna!

Not quite sure why this is a poll! What you need is a book on qualitative research - loads to choose from but I particularly like this one:

'The Zone' and how to get into it...
T

I have started doing two things that have really helped my ability to actually get things done:

1) I work on my laptop as it isn't connected to the internet. I only go on the net in the evenings - well, after 4pm :$
This has helped A LOT.

2) I read the Joan Bolker book recommended on here (see thread on writing your dissertation in 15 minutes a day). It has some great tips for getting down to work. I now set a timer for 45 minutes - work solidly and then do the housework for 15 minutes. I do this for most of the day although as I get into it I find that 45 minutes is not enough so I keep on going. Guess what? I have finished loads more and I have a cleaner house 8-)

Abstract length
T

Ooops...have just submitted an abstract for a conference absolutely convinced that it had to be 250 words long (I just kept within the limit). Now I see it actually says a maximum of 500 words - do you think it's a problem? Should I ask if I can add something or just let it be? And why didn't I read the instructions properly BEFORE submitting?! :$

Should I apply to academia?
T

My reply is purely based on my personal circumstances and I am not in science! I "planned" on having my second child before starting a PhD - unfortunately planning is not enough - sometimes these things don't work out. If having two kids is your priority then I wouldn't postpone any longer than strictly necessary. The details you can work out later!

I hate my dentist...
T

I live in Italy but come back to the UK for the dentist - it is much cheaper in the UK than in Italy! (BTW I'm talking about a private dentist not a NHS one!)

Any PhD moms ?
T

Smilodon - my three year old is potty trained :-) I must admit I just left it to the nursery and they made an excellent job of it - good luck!
