Final Year Undergrad module choice
T

I can't answer from a Economics perspective specifically, but in my Biology BSc I took 'easier' modules which enabled me to get a First, and I think this has served me better on paper than a 2.1 with more relevant modules.

This was also because I didn't know what was going to be relevant because I didn't know what I would need in the future, but it's a difficult one, because throughout my PhD I wished I had taken those other modules because it would have aided my understanding of my topic, but maybe I wouldn't have got my PhD if I had a 2.1 with those modules - so I feel your dilemma!

On your CV, you are probably not going to write which modules you took each year, so you can already write micro and macro economics and that is probably enough? I wrote 'cell biology' for example, and that could have been in first year or third year and there was no way for them to know.

To apply or not to that is the question

This is true, but then you might end up in the 'I've applied for 50+ positions and can't a PhD/job' clique - some of reasons being that the job market is difficult, but other reasons are because a person can't possibly be suited to all these posts and the jobs are going to those that are.

Viva scheduled for only 5 DAYS after thesis submit!

It does seem a bit strange. My examiner contacted me with a list of possible dates and asked which was convenient. I wouldn't like a few days notice either! I'm sure it will go well MJ107 - at least everything is fresh in your mind.

I think if people are asking for specific techniques, they really are looking for that technique.

I would keep looking if I were you.

No response from my supervisor after accepting to supervise me

Is it a funded project or are you bringing your own funding?

Generally I would think so too, but spammers don't normally give a list of questions, so I'm not sure...

Same, chickpea!

Secondwing, I think people that read your post just don't have the problem, but it's definitely a relevant topic for this forum.

I've never heard of it, sorry.

How do you deal with jealousy issue at your cohort?
T

I do agree with Rina. People shouldn't really have to move offices because of other people and it's not a sensible way to deal with conflict - it's just burying your head in the sand, when really it needs to be resolved and the behaviour dealt with.

I choose to ignore my office mate because she doesn't bother me at all, but other people that were in my office before me choose to leave because they couldn't handle it. They tried to get it dealt with by management/supervisor but it went nowhere so they had no other option really.

ah I see, so maybe is about you specifically. Well you have several options: discuss it again with her, discuss it with her manager, discuss it with your manager and ask them to discuss it with her/her manager, ignore it, move office.

Sounds like you are describing someone in my office! Some people are just not nice to work with. Try to ignore it if you can. I just don't speak to the person in my office unless she speaks to me first. I have no idea what her issue is, but I do know that I'm not the target because she is like it with everyone.

How do you know the person doesn't do the same thing when others are on their own in the office? Maybe she does, but they don't care about it?

American PhD (ABD) Applying to lecture in UK Universities?
T

I think you could ask them. It's possible that they could give you some guest lectures if nothing else.

Whether they would pay you or not would depend on whether they did have a position available. Most UK temporary lecture positions run from Sept to June and would be usually be full time with full benefits, so they would be unlikely to take on someone if they didn't already need someone. You don't need any specific qualifications other than a PhD, but generally lecturer positions are given to people with teaching experience (which you have) and maybe research experience (which you have).

Sometimes lectures are given by other people other than the university staff though, so I presume that these are paid and it must be possible just to give the odd lecture without a permanent position.

Anyone else have any ideas?
