Supervisor Mistake Leaves me with No PhD After 4 years
T

You might be right Ian, from reading the later posts, but the initial post seemed to relinquish the OP from all responsibility when they mentioned things such as "he sent me to a conference with falsified data" (he probably didn't SEND them, seems to imply it was intentional, when maybe it wasn't) and "My main supervisor...told me a material I had ..was the material I was expecting. On the basis of this I.."

My supervisors have assured me my work was correct many times, and sometimes they were wrong, but I didn't blame them for it - I feel it was my lack of knowledge and confidence that led to the errors. I also went to a conference making claims based on my supervisor's assurances that I later found out were incorrect. Of course these were small things and my main conclusions and data are correct, so it's a different situation.

But I do wonder, how the reviewers knew the work was wrong: "My second paper was rejected because the reviewers stated the material was incorrect" when others didn't?

I've never heard that in the sciences, I think it's better for the lr to be comprehensive - I've heard more often that ppl are asked to include things rather than remove.

It's really your responsibility to ensure your data are correct, not your supervisor's. I think you need to discuss this with your supervisor or head of department regarding whether you will have enough to submit for. PhD with the incorrect data.

funding for a post-doc in the USA (I am German but did my PhD in the US)
T

Does it need to be a fellowship or can you just look for a post doc as an employee? I thought that there was no restriction on nationality if you were employed by a university? I know there can be restrictions if you apply to the federal organisations like the USDA. I saw several international students and post docs when I was in the U.S. and I imagine they were just on J1 visas?

That's fine I think, especially if your other chapters are concise. The examiners can always skip it if they get bored!

I just proof read it myself once it was printed- easier to spot errors that way.

I'm sure your thesis will be fine lemon juice!

maybe she was

2:2 BSc and MSc, should I not bother to apply to Oxbridge at all?

It's our lack of language skills Dunham, plus the inability to get a decent cup of tea outside of the UK :P

Yeah they do normally. I know DTP biology ones do. If you're getting £14k for 4 years that seems correct - what were you expecting?

Early exit with PG Diploma to start new MSc or finishing old MSc before doing a new one?
T

Seems like your best option is to take the diploma for MS1 and do the MS2. There's not much point in doing both. Or you could just finish the MS1 and apply for the PhD.

PhD Advice

You need to try to discuss your concerns with your supervisor, and if nothing comes of that, then you need to speak to the pastoral carers or head of year in your department. Do you have to have an annual assessment? You could also discuss what you need from your supervisor in that.

Funding for travel during PhD
T

Nope, but your supervisor should be able to help. Are there societies you can join? In biology they would be things like 'society for general microbiology' or 'society for applied microbiology' and then you apply for travel grants.

Conference papers????

I just listed publications (all one of them) as Moonblue described and then attached then as an appendix at the end. There were no guidelines for this at my uni.

End of the Very Long Road?

Unless your supervisor can give you specific sections where your writing needs improving and can rewrite it better to show you as an example, I wouldn't worry about it.
