Long or short conclusion?
T

Quote From theboakster:

However, when I've looked at guidance on writing conclusions they all seem to suggest that what I should be doing is not introducing any new material, but summarising what I've found in my main chapters, acknowledging what the original contribution is, and then discussing further avenues for work...

Agree, that's a conclusion.

and this should therefore be shorter than 10,000 words.

Disagree, depending on what material you have to discuss it could be this long.

I don't think 'taking a broader historical perspective' counts as new material really, because it's a just a synthesis of your ideas. Plus, it's not necessarily a conclusion chapter, more like a discussion chapter, so reading about what to write to in a conclusion might not be accurate.

I don't think you would get major corrections to rewrite a conclusion/discussion chapter. They are usually quite quick to write.

But I'm in the Sciences so it might be different (but mine is about 10,000 words).

That's great news about the job Tulip, well done! Is it a postdoc?

question on citations during writing
T

I do both of these things. I think if I'm writing something I'm familiar with then I just write and add references later, but if it's something that I will forget where I got it from then I will add references as write. If I really want to get ideas down quickly I might just write a short hand reference like (Bloggs) just so I remember where I got it from, then update with the real thing later.

Was thinking about it, but there's no app for it.. and I don't want to do it via my work PC.

literature review before PhD?
T

I'm not sure that's a very common thing in science. Have you seen many literature reviews published? Review papers, when done properly, are usually written by eminent scientists in the field. It will be taken less seriously if written by an amateur. There's really no need to have anything published before starting a PhD in science. Anyone I know with papers before starting a PhD had them as an undergrad or MSc student where they made a small contribution to a larger project.

Well, most of it seems achievable, depending on how long your general discussion is. Mine was 17 pages 1.5 spaced and took about 35-40 hours.

It's definitely not impossible - keep going, you're nearly there!

literature review before PhD?

What's your discipline? In the sciences I would say it's probably best to wait because your supervisors probably have their own idea regarding the topics they want a literature review on.

What you do mean by 'submit a review'? Get it published?

Can you not reregister at your old uni then? What was the PhD in? I think it's very difficult to reenter for submission elsewhere.

Conferences
T

No I think it looks very good! It's better than applying to conferences and being accepted for a talk, in Biology anyway.

Emailing an entire thesis as a Word master document
T

Yeah it's the size of the file that's the issue, rather than the number of pages. I didn't try to reduce the size of my figures (should have!) and in the end my thesis was over 250 MB.

What do you mean 'links in the thesis'? You mean in the table of contents?

You can send it by gmail/google docs if you both have it.

Yes, I can confirm Word struggles to cope with 200+ pages... but you can still make a functional document.

Looks like mods have removed his posts anyway, so that says it all really.

You think attempts to de-anonymise people will be acceptable by the moderators, AndrewPetelov? I doubt it. Whether you first mentioned it or not, you're the one that attempted it, and you did it because it was the only underhanded tactic you had. Most of us on this forum don't conduct ourselves in such a manner, and we would prefer that others didn't either.
