No email away. They might talk but they might not. There is no database. I know lots of international students that have got their PhDs this way. They were funded by their governments though.

Citing a book
T

I think you cite the authors of the chapter you are referencing.

If you want to cite from multiple chapters you need to reference them separately.

Something like this: Stewart GA, Jones JJ, Smith C & Brown R (1994). Chapter Title. In: White J, editors. In Random Book. pp. 411–436. Cambridge University Press

Advice on opportunities in UK after postdoc

The job market isn't that different from the US if you are prepared to move around. There's more jobs in the US obviously though because it's much bigger.

I don't think your nationality makes any difference at postdoc level if you are a good competitive researcher.

You can get company sponsored working visas but I don't know how easy this is.

Self-funding?

It's a no-brainer for me. Follow your dream. If you want to do a PhD for the sake of doing one then go for it.
That's what I did. I started my PhD when I was 27. Probably wasn't logical but it had to be done otherwise I would have thought about for the rest of my life. I've just applied for a job that has the same salary as the one I left four years ago. I don't care though, it was never about the money or job prospects for me. Having said that, I am striving for a career in academia so I will see how that plays out.

are you going to make a survey about it as well?

PhD Proposal Ramblings

I don't know of anyone on here with this sort of PhD, but there might be.

I think you can do it as a design project, where the thing you design is your result, and then you would just write up the chapters with intros, methods and discussion like any other PhD.

Does anyone have experience with 'PhD by published work.'
T

These type of PhDs are very rare in British universities.

Or maybe not... check out these google search results: https://www.google.co.uk/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=phd%20by%20published%20work%20uk

Is this normal?

Thanks everyone. I feel better now, thinking about it as you have mentioned as a coping mechanism and that it will pass.

Is this normal?

Yeah maybe you're right. That's ok then, it will end when I'm out of captivity. Can't take a break as I only have 3 months to go.

Is this normal?

At the moment I've been working 60 hours a week for the past 8 months, trying to write my thesis and papers and finish lab work. When I'm at university I'm fine, but when I see friends or family it makes me really unhappy. I don't know why. I don't feel stressed or depressed the rest of the time, just when I see them and for a few days afterwards. I only see them every couple of weeks and even that feels like too much.

Has anyone else felt like this? I'm hoping this will go away once I've submitted and I can go back to working normal hours again.

Commuting vs. Living Near Uni for PhD study
T

My personal feelings are that students that live far from university have a somewhat reduced experience. It means they are less likely to participate in university activities because they have limited time and want to focus on work, and are less available for spontaneous nights out and so forth.

I live 20 mins walk from uni and I love it on the weekends when I can just pop in the car and I'm there in 5 mins. It makes a big difference to me. I'm not likely to pop in on the weekend to set up a 5 experiment ready for Monday if I had to make an hour round trip for example.

Most students I know like to live as close as possible to uni.

Is a 20,000 word chapter too long?
T

Quote From DrJeckyll:
I would say it is too long.

If a PhD is 6 main chapters plus introduction and conclusion, then each main chapter should be around 10.000 words (did a science PhD, maybe it is different in other disciplines). I broke my methodology into two chapters of 10K.

Does it really matter though if you have some chapters longer than others? Mine aren't going to be of equal length because some have more data than others. So far one of my data chapters is 30 pages, 10,000 words and the other is 50 pages, 15,000 words. I know of other people who have 5000 word chapters.

UK Chancellor announces loans for PhDs (yes, really)
T

I wouldn't take out a loan for my 4th year even if it was offered. I've managed to scrape by spending £700pm for the past 8 months and I'd rather that than get into debt that will take years to pay back.

stuck with language
T

I would write "Subject X has been studied a lot internationally: in the UK (Smith 2000, 2001, 2003), in Australia (Snow, 2012) and in the US (Red, 2012). But I don't think it matters too much.

Quote from the budget: " However, demand for individuals with doctorates is outstripping supply, both in the UK and internationally".

Data claims to be taken from here

Obviously I haven't read the whole article but I don't see much evidence of this - rather it seems to focus on differences in pay and abilities between people with undergrad degrees and those with postgrad degrees
