UK Chancellor announces loans for PhDs (yes, really)

Also, £25k is not going to fund someone for 3-4 years so where does the rest of the money come from??

UK Chancellor announces loans for PhDs (yes, really)

Yes I saw this... I don't think it's a great idea, except for maybe non-science students where funding is very difficult to acquire. We don't need more PhDs - what's the point in people gaining skills when they can't use them because there's very few high skilled jobs available and the general employers don't value them anyway???

Is a 20,000 word chapter too long?

I think it's ok. My longest one (so far!) is 15,000.

PhD Offer: Should I Accept, Defer, Suspend, Reject?

Maybe just see if you can look around on the website and access the student handbook or something as it should be mentioned in there.

The policy will be for the whole university/department, but it will implemented on a case by case basis.

PhD Offer: Should I Accept, Defer, Suspend, Reject?

Quote From samhort:
Is the possibility of suspending my research something I could ask the University about in advance, to make my intentions clear?

You could try and find out unofficially in advance, but I doubt they would accept you if they know you are going to suspend your studies. You are usually allowed to do this, but it depends whether they will think you have a good enough reason to do so. Usual reasons for suspending studies are things such as illness, pregnancy, deaths in family etc, although I have heard of someone that suspended their studies to get married and go travelling, so it is possible.

No response after PhD interview

Not necessarily, I heard back from my successful interview within hours. It depends on the university.

Or, start the PhD (at least you will be paid for a year if nothing else) and then hope you can suspend your studies for the bar exam / go part time. If not, you will have only lost a year, but bear in mind it might be difficult to get another PhD in the future.

MPhil

Yes if you don't already have a masters

BS deadlines
T

So what are these deadlines for, experiments or thesis? When does your funding finish? It's really up to you to set your deadlines, but you have to factor in how many results you need etc. My university says that experiments should finish by 2.75 years when you are funded for 3 years, but here I am, 3.5 years and still not finished in the lab. I have made the decision to carry on though, not my supervisors, because I know I need these extra few results.

honorary doctorats
T

They are not worth anything - it's not they do research and write a thesis to get them.

Physics degree
T

ok, first of all, can you do a MSc in Earth Science with a physics degree? Can you do an MSc with a 3rd? What jobs are there for graduates with a 3rd? I think you need to research these questions.

Authorship of publication, Should my supervisor be the first author?
T

In my lab, and in most other labs in my biology department, students are generally first author even though the supervisors might have got the funding and designed the experiments. You might not be first author if you don't bother to write up your work and your supervisor does it, or another student that carries on your work does it, but I think that's fair enough.

In a complicated affair with supervisor
T

Honestly, I think you're being manipulated. I don't think he loves you and the way he is making you feel is very unfair. If I were you, I would confide in another faculty member and see what you should do. I wouldn't be surprised if you were not the first student that he has had a relationship with...

Last thought - you are not offending him, he is telling you that to make you feel guilty. It's text book manipulation.

Some advice?
T

Just to let you know, UK students generally start their PhDs in the first week of October, even though technically PhDs can start at any time. Sounds like you have a good chance of getting in if you write a good application. Good luck!

Master of Science in Business Management in UK

You will have to check their admission pages, but most universities want a 2.1 for MSc acceptance.

Eds meant Cardiff is good too.
