QR codes for poster presentations?

Not that I've noticed, but then I'm not really one for this kind of thing.

I just take photos of posters I'm interested in, or email the authors and ask for more info.

How long does it take to receive a Senate letter after submit correction?
T

After the examiner signs off the corrections, you need to wait until the exam board until you get a letter from the senate. At my uni, this isn't until the end of September now.... You can check these dates on your uni website. You won't get a certificate until after graduation, whether you are attending it or not.

You should call the examiner and ask him what's going on, rather than waiting for an email. Please remember that they actually need to check your corrections, so you need to give them time to do this and a week is probably insufficient. Examiners are very busy people.

You can check all of this with your administration department for your School. The person is probably called a postgraduate administrator or something similar.

One paper I cannot get, can you help?

Ok, maybe PM it to the OP then? I could only see the abstract and saw no way to get the full version. It looked like it wasn't available, rather than being stuck behind a pay wall.

Mortgage on PhD stipend
T

Very good advice from pm133.

Also should note, my mortgage offer is from a mainstream lender (actually my current lender) and I was just testing the water, I haven't actually gone ahead with it because although they may think my income is safe, I of course know better! I'm waiting to get a permanent contact before I commit to something I may not be able to afford if this contact doesn't get renewed.

Thoughts on my supervision
T

I'm not sure perceived inexperience is such a bad thing. Having recently graduated in 2016, I think I would make a pretty good supervisor for a MSc or PhD student. I know how the system works and I have loads of previous management experience. I don't think you should assume that your supervisor will be not great just because they are a recent graduate.

Mortgage on PhD stipend

Search the forum - there's been some posts on this a few years ago. I think it's possible. I think lending rules have relaxed recently as jobs have become less secure.

I just asked about getting a mortgage and got approved on the basis of my 1 year FT contract plus the fact that I've been the in same work field for the past 5 years. I feel this wouldn't have happened a few years ago; they would have wanted me to have been on a permanent contract.

Your tutor is saying it's too broad and they want you to narrow it down. I think your suggestion sounds more specific, but this isn't my area so it's hard to say. You should check it with your tutor.

What laptop to buy?
T

Mine is an Asus, cost about £350 I think (was a present). Could do with a better one, but can't give any more advice on which one! I would pay the most I could for it personally.

Some unis provide laptops when they can't give you desk space. Often you have to give it back afterwards; it's just a loan.

I don't think you can get it - it's too old to be online for this journal. Have you checked your library for a copy?

found immense error after viva, feel like an impostor

I think most of us have gone through this at some point or another. Honestly, it doesn't matter, your viva is done, everything is finished. When you publish, just add in what you should have added in. No one will read your thesis in sufficient detail to notice the difference.

PhD Advice

Spend your time doing all those things you've been meaning to do for ages but haven't got around to... you're not going to have much time to do them over the next 6 or so years!

Joking aside, congrats on getting on to a PhD. You can read up on things like 'what I wished I knew when I started my PhD' etc, so you know what to expect. Also try and find out what training will be available when you start (might be on uni website) and reading a few odd things in your field. But really you don't need to do anything, you can do all this when you start as the first stages are very slow.

If I quit my PhD will I struggle to be accepted on another course?
T

PhDs are needed for the next level: Research Associate.

It's more about explaining the gap in your CV. You can put on or off it what you like. Plus, it's possible your supervisors will know your previous supervisors - what are you going to say in an interview if they ask you about it? Lying isn't a good strategy.

If I quit my PhD will I struggle to be accepted on another course?
T

Some people on here have quit PhDs and got funding for another one, so it is possible, but it does make it harder.

But is it necessary to quit? A PhD is a training program, you are not supposed to know everything at this stage. Can't you ask for more support from your supervisors? Or see what other support the university can provide? Or teach yourself via online courses?
