Must be exciting/nerve wracking to be in that position!

Yes definitely! In this job I am constantly doing things I never dreamed I would do. I thought a PhD was a pipe dream so it's incredible for me that I'm now lecturing, supervising u/g research projects and now interviewing PhD students! I've done interviews for staff members before in previous roles but this is the first time in academia.

Thanks for your comments so far. Yes I will aim to include a range of questions - I'm just interested in people's opinions really. It's an interview panel so other people will have their own questions anyway and I don't know what those are.

I think the most important ones are things like, how do you cope when things get tough, or give an example of a time when you had to seek outside help for a problem you were having. I want a resilient student!

Posters and papers - conferences and journals
T

I've never considered this to be plagiarism, since, as you say, I've always presented my work at a conference before publication. Conferences are not really the same thing as a publication in my field though. Conferences tend to be for ongoing/unfinished work and it's then expected to be written up in its finished format and published in a journal.

I want to fullfill my Ph.D dream. Where do I start??

It's probably quite difficult for us to advise you here, because we are mostly from the UK/studying in the UK and aren't familiar with the system and opportunities in India.

MRes/MPhil are pretty much equivalent degrees.

You may struggle to be able to do a part time PhD in 4-5 years, since there are guidelines for amount of time on a PhD that has to be spent prior to submission. For example, at my uni it's 2.75 years. So, part time equivalent would be at least 5.5 years. And remember this is submission, so then you have to wait for a viva and corrections etc.

Can I copy parts of my master thesis directly into my PhD? How to reference copied text?
T

Yep, copying from a MSc thesis is not allowed at my uni either - that's taken more seriously than copying from one of your own papers (see my comments on your other post). I think this is because your papers are from your PhD thesis, whereas your MSc thesis is a completely different piece of work.

‘three papers’ PhD
T

I think this depends on your uni. I'm assuming you're not doing a PhD by publication from what you've said.

At my uni, people tend to rewrite the papers because a PhD chapter generally needs more detail or preamble than a paper allows. I expect there are still some paragraphs that are very similar to text in the papers though. I have some identical figures, for example. Whilst this is technically plagiarism, in reality I don't think you would be penalised for it because it's obvious it's your work and this isn't the sort of plagiarism that universities are trying to prevent.

I think it can be a bit more problematic if you are not the first author on the paper though. Then people could argue that it is not your work. In my case, I am first author for the three papers that make up my three data chapters in my thesis, so it's fine, plus there's way more stuff in my thesis than in my published papers.

Ah I see. What's your subject area helebon? For sciences I would say definitely don't do it. Funded PhDs are relatively easy to get if you have decent BSc grades or an MSc and there really aren't that many applicants to some of them.

Do you really want to spend 6-8 years of your life scrabbling for money on a part-time PhD? What if there is no decent job at the end of it?

You can research your own ideas after a PhD by applying for research grants yourself.

I'll be interviewing potential PhD candidates soon and I've got to come up with a list of questions.

What questions did you really hate being asked or struggled to answer in your PhD interview?

What questions did you wished you had been asked?

Or, if you had have experience with interviewing for PhDs before, what questions should I avoid or make sure I should include?

It's a £25K max I think, not per year. But still, not a good idea.

Disability: PhD supervisor told me they wouldnt have taken me on because of my disabilities
T

Hmm, seems very odd. I would discuss this further with your supervisor and find out why they are saying this. Doesn't seem right to me. If they are not forthcoming then you could go and speak to admin and see what they advise.
