Going forward???

I personally don't see how another qualification is going to help you. You've got loads of experience, even if most of it is outside academia. You've already got the qualifications required to work in academia, so getting more isn't really going to prove anything, even if what you know is out of date, the fact that you have a PhD in the first place shows you can learn new things as required.

If I were you I would apply for research or teaching positions or what ever it is you want to do and see what happens. You wouldn't be the first person to come back into academia after a stint in industry.

Anyone in social sciences with any thoughts on this?

How to encourage student participation in PhD study
T

Give them cash? As a PhD student, I was paid at least £5 to take part in studies - this wasn't online though, I had to meet them in an office and do the test there. I think the most I got was £15 for 30 mins.

Accommodation Options for a Mature Postgrad
T

Most postgrads house/flat share with other postgrads, either through the uni or privately. In my city this costs around £400 to £600 per month for rent + bills. Studio or 1 bed flats are minimum £600+ for rent only and the cheapest of these are not very nice and further out from the uni.

I think the closer you are to uni the better, as otherwise it's a pain to have to walk home long distances or get public transport if you can't park at uni.

It's a hard one, because a Masters isn't very long. When I moved for my postdoc, I rented out my house for the year and then rented the cheapest (horrible) place I could find in the other city. I could have taken stuff with me, but didn't want to as it was just for a year, and in the end I bought cheap stuff that I just left behind.

I think what you do depends on what sort of person you are and how you like to live. I hated it in that flat because of the cheap things I had and because it was a horrible place - I'm in my early 30s too and that was too much like back to impoverished student days for me. I know this doesn't bother other people though. That was my only option though as it was all I could afford.

Thank goodness I'm now in very well paid job! (at least for this year anyway...)

Define special education?

How to tell supervisor they are wrong?
T

Does your supervisor have a background in molecular biology or genetics? If not, then you need to educate them a bit because you're correct, if they do, then you need to get them to explain to you why it makes a difference what cell type the DNA is extracted from.

Powerpoint, make sure you size it correctly to the size you are printing though.

How to tell supervisor they are wrong?

Maybe it depends on the disease you're looking at? If it's something like cancer then mutations might only be in the cancerous cells, so there's not much point in looking at DNA from elsewhere

If not, then yeah, any genomic DNA will do. Are you sure it's not that your supervisor wants you to look at the transcriptome ie the RNA or something?

Help!! What can i do now to build up towards a successful PhD application
T

What's your subject? Are you aware of how difficult it is to get a lecturer job? It's not advisable to do a PhD unless it's funded.

1) Get some relevant work experience, publish papers etc
2) No, getting a lectureship will depend on your publications and research in about 10 years post PhD...
3) Read up more on what a PhD is and what the job market is like post PhD.

Feeling really embarrased after bad interview and have to see panel again
T

No it's not common to follow up by email in the UK, but if I was having an interview in my department by people who only sort of knew me and it went badly personally I would send a follow up email, just in case they were then doubting my ability. Ordinarily I wouldn't bother, because I don't think it makes the slightest difference. Decisions are made that day or the next day anyway.

In this case, since you know them, I might email them to apologise for being late and say that it threw me off my game or something. Then I would just thank them for taking the time to interview me.

Or if you will see them tomorrow, say it then. Don't say you thought you did really badly as you don't know how the other candidates were.

Please provide a bit of detail about the surveys rather than just posting the links. Thanks.

Finding a PhD

Quote From antary:
Thanks TreeofLife. I will try to contact unis. For the time being, the online PhDs are every where.

They might be everywhere, but I imagine most lack credibility. A PhD is a research degree where you should be embedded in a research group so you can become a member of a scientific community. This is difficult to achieve sat behind a computer.
